  1. 1. Regulation of fibroblast activity by keratinocytes, TGF-β and IL-1α : studies in two- and three dimensional in vitro models

    Author : Anita Koskela von Sydow; Mikael Ivarsson; Torbjörn Bengtsson; Hans Törmä; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Fibroblast; Keratinocyte; TGF-β; IL-1α; coculture; fibrosis CTGF CNN 2; dermal; organotypic culture;

    Abstract : Dysregulated wound healing is commonly associated with excessive fibrosis. Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF/CCN2) is characteristically overexpressed in fibrotic diseases and stimulated by transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) in dermal fibroblasts. Reepithelialisation and epidermal wound coverage counteract excessive scar formation. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies of the tumor microenvironment : Local and systemic effects exerted by the cross-talk between tumor and stroma cells in pancreatic cancer

    Author : Vegard Tjomsland; Marie Larsson; Arne Östman; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Pancreatic cancer; cancer associated fibroblasts; dendritic cells; IL-1alpha; tumor microenvironment; inflammation; bukspottkörtelcancer; Bukspyttkjertel kreft; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal cancers and despite all research efforts the last 50 years, there are still no effective therapy for this terrible disease. Until quite recently most research in the field of pancreatic duct adenocarcinoma (PDAC) was focused on the tumor cells and mechanisms essential for their proliferation and survival. READ MORE

  3. 3. Interactions between Malignant Keratinocytes and Fibroblasts : Studies in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma

    Author : Malin Hakelius; Daniel Nowinski; Bengt Gerdin; Kristofer Rubin; Avni Abdiu; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; coculture; extracellular matrix; interleukin-1 alpha; tumor stroma; differential gene regulation; innate response; Plastic Surgery; Plastikkirurgi;

    Abstract : Carcinoma growth requires a supportive tumor stroma. The concept of reciprocal interactions between tumor and stromal cells has become widely acknowledged and the connective tissue activation seen in the malignant process has been likened to that of a healing wound. READ MORE

  4. 4. Role of interleukin-1 in fever and inflammation

    Author : Maria Zetterström; Charles A. Dinarello; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurochemistry; Neurokemi; neurokemi och neurotoxikologi; Neurochemistry and Neurotoxicology;

    Abstract : The proinflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL) -1α, IL-1β and IL-6 are key mediators in the host's response to injury and infection. One of the systemic responses elicited by these proinflammatory cytokines, when injected peripherally or centrally, is fever. Thus, these proteins may act as endogenous pyrogens. READ MORE

  5. 5. Regulation of Fibroblast Activity by Keratinocytes

    Author : Daniel Nowinski; Mikael Ivarsson; Bengt Gerdin; Elof Ph D M.D. Eriksson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; conective tissue growth factor; interleukin-1; fibroblast; keratinocyte; wound healing; burns; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : In the healing of cutaneous wounds, paracrine communication between keratinocytes and fibroblasts regulates cell differentiation, proliferation and synthesis of extracellular matrix. Deficient epidermal coverage, as seen in burn-wounds, frequently results in hypertrophic scars. READ MORE
