  1. 1. Airway allergic inflammation. A role of bone marrow and relationship to substance P

    Author : Masafumi Tomaki; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; asthma; eosinophils; bone marrow; T lymphocytes; IL-3; IL-5; GM-CSF; substance P.;

    Abstract : Airway inflammation, along with reversible airway narrowing and airway hyperresponsiveness, is a central pathophysiological feature of bronchial asthma. The airway inflammation in asthma is dominated by eosinophils, cells that originate in the bone marrow. READ MORE

  2. 2. The oxidative metabolism by eosinophils : Effects of allergen exposure and interleukin-5

    Author : Charlotte Woschnagg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Eosinophils; allergy; asthma; rhinitis; oxidative metabolism; IL-5; priming; signal transduction; protein phosphorylation; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : In this thesis the oxidative metabolism by blood eosinophils from birch pollen allergic subjects was studied and compared to that by eosinophils from healthy controls, during and out of the pollen season. The effects and mechanisms of in vitro IL-5 priming on blood eosinophils were investigated and compared to the effects of in vivo priming during pollen exposure. READ MORE

  3. 3. Immunological mechanisms involved in seasonal pollen allergy and allergen-specific immunotherapy

    Author : Robert Movérare; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Allergy; birch pollen; IFN-g; IgE; IgG; IgG4; IL-4; IL-5; IL-10; IL-13; immunotherapy; PBMC; rush immunotherapy; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; lungmedicin; Lung Medicine;

    Abstract : Th1/Th2-like T-cell responses were studied by stimulating peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) with allergens or antigens followed by restimulation with mitogens to induce high cytokine synthesis. Allergen-stimulation in vitro induced Th2-skewed cytokine synthesis by PBMCs from birch-pollen-allergic patients. READ MORE

  4. 4. The middle ear : The inflammatory response in children with otitis media with effusion and the impact of atopy : clinical and histochemical studies

    Author : David S. Hurst; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Allergy; atopy; eosinophil cationic protein; IL-5; tryptase; otitis media with effusion; in vitro testing; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : Otitis media with effusion (OME) is the major form of chronic relapsing inflammatory disease of the middle ear, constitutes the most common diagnosis for children under 15 years old and is the major cause of auditory dysfunction in pre-school children. OME is a disease more commonly found in allergic children. READ MORE

  5. 5. IL-25 and B cells in atherosclerosis

    Author : Polyxeni Mantani; Kardiovaskulär forskning - immunitet och ateroskleros; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; IL-25; B cells; ILC2s; IL-5; anti-PC IgM; atherosclerosis; stroke; cardiovascular events;

    Abstract : Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of medium and large vessels of the body which is mainly characterized by the formation of lipid rich plaques within the arterial tissue. It is the most common cause of cardiovascular disease leading to clinical manifestations of coronary artery and cerebrovascular disease. READ MORE
