  1. 6. Metabolic effects of interleukin-6

    Author : Ingrid Wernstedt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : IL-6; cytokine; obesity; energy expenditure; lipolysis; ASP; sympathetic nervous system; exercise; -174 G C IL-6 polymorphism; fat mass; stress response; cerebrospinal fluid;

    Abstract : The levels of the cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the circulation are positively correlated with indices of obesity and metabolic disturbances. Paradoxically, plasma IL-6 levels increase markedly during prolonged and strenuous exercise, mainly due to increased production and release from working skeletal muscle. READ MORE

  2. 7. Insulin-like Growth Factor-I (IGF-I) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) regulate body fat

    Author : Kristina Wallenius; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obesity; insulin-like growth factor I IGF-I ; interleukin-6 IL-6 ; growth hormone GH ; GH releasing factor GHRF ; GH secretagogue GHS ; receptor; leptin; insulin; glucose; intracerebroventricular ICV ; dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry DXA ; indirect calorimetry.;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the role of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the regulation of metabolism and body fat mass. Circulating IGF-I is mainly liver derived, while a large part of circulating IL-6 is produced by adipose tissue. READ MORE

  3. 8. Inhibition of WNT5A Signaling and Function in Malignant Melanoma

    Author : Rickard Linnskog; Malmö Experimentell cancerforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; WNT5A; Malignant Melanoma; Migration; Invasion; TGFβ; IL-6; p38-MAPK;

    Abstract : The life-threatening disease of malignant melanoma is one of the fastest growing forms of cancer, affecting an estimated number of 200,000 patients worldwide every year. Although highly curable if detected early, once the melanoma has metastasized there are few treatment options and a median survival rate of only 6-9 months. READ MORE

  4. 9. Effects of cytokines on preadipocyte differentiation and Wnt signalling

    Author : Birgit Gustafson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : adipocyte differentiation; adiponectin; beta-Catenin; C EBPalpha; IL-6; PPARgamma; TNFalpha; Wnt signalling;

    Abstract : The relationship between amount of adipose tissue, the Metabolic Syndrome and Type 2 diabetes has been recognized for several years. However, the mechanisms for this remain to be clarified. Not all obese individuals develop insulin resistance or Type 2 diabetes and these perturbations are also seen in non-obese individuals. 5. 10. Cytokines in Metabolic Functions

    Author : Anna Benrick; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : IL-1; IL-6; LIF; obesity; fat mass; energy expenditure; hypothalamus; gp130 SNP; myocardial infarction;

    Abstract : During infections, circulating cytokines are largely produced by immune cells. In healthy obese individuals, large parts of these circulating cytokines are produced in adipose tissue, for instance by macrophages that have accumulated there. READ MORE
