  1. 1. Mechanistic studies of localized corrosion of Al alloys by high resolution in-situ and ex-situ probing techniques

    Author : Ali Davoodi; Jinshan Pan; Gerald S. Frankel; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; localized corrosion; pitting; aluminum alloy; intermetallic particle; Volta potential; cathodic activity; micro-galvanic effect; size dependence; SKPFM; in-situ AFM; integrated AFM SECM; numerical simulation; micrometer resolution; EIS.; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : A multi-analytical approach based on in-situ and ex-situ local probing techniques was employed to investigate localized corrosion mechanisms of some aluminum alloys in chloride containing solutions, focusing on the influence of intermetallic particles (IMPs) in the alloys. In the EN AW-3003 alloy, SEM-EDS analysis revealed constituent and dispersoid IMPs. READ MORE

  2. 2. Protein targeting, translocation and insertion in Escherichia coli : Proteomic analysis of substrate-pathway relationships

    Author : Louise Baars; Jan-Willem de Gier; Jan-Maarten van Dijl; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; protein biogenesis; targeting; translocation; insertion; SecB; SecE; E. coli; Biochemistry; Biokemi; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Approximately 10% of the open reading frames in the genome of the Gram-negative bacterium E. coli encodes secretory proteins, and 20% encodes integral inner membrane proteins (IMPs). READ MORE

  3. 3. Improved Techniques for Protein Analysis Focusing on Membrane Proteins and Hydrophobic Peptides

    Author : Theres Redeby; Åsa Emmer; Jonas ergquist; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Integral membrane proteins; Hydrophobic peptides; Sample handling; MALDI-TOF-MS; Structured sample support; CE; fraction collection; microchannel; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the vital cell functions performed by integral membrane proteins (IMPs) are briefly discussed. Such proteins are under-represented in most protein studies due to the hydrophobic nature of IMPs, which seriously complicate their solubilization, sample handling, preparation, separation and analysis. 4. 4. DFT calculations of initial localized corrosion of aluminum : Influence of aqueous ad-layer, chloride ions, and intermetallic particles

    Author : Min Liu; Jinshan Pan; Ying Chen; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aluminum alloys; alumina; chloride; surface adsorption; aqueous ad-layer; localized corrosion; corrosion initiation; work function; micro-galvanic effect; density-functional theory; Volta potential; scanning kelvin probe force microscopy; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Localized corrosion of aluminum (Al, here including Al alloys) involves a series of physico-chemical processes at the interface between the metal and the aqueous ad-layer or the aqueous solution. The mechanisms that govern localized corrosion are quite complex and have been the subject of many experimental studies. READ MORE

  5. 5. Insane in the membrane: : Insertion of marginally hyrdophobic transmembrane helices and global analysis of membrane protein topology

    Author : Daniel Nilsson; Arne Elofsson; Susanna Törnroth Horsefield; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Proteins are responsible for carrying out most of the tasks in a living cell; transcription, translation, replication, movement, catalysis and communication to mention a few. A subset of proteins is the integral membrane proteins, IMPs, which play an important role in governing communication across membranes, whether it is the plasma membrane or an organelle membrane.
