  1. 1. Influence of host genetics on innate immunity and susceptibility to urinary tract infection

    Author : Bryndis Ragnarsdottir; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neutrophils; IRF3; Innate Immunity; urinary tract infections; acute pyelonephritis; asymptomatic bacteriuria; Toll-like receptor 4; CXCR1; TLR4 adaptors; polymorphisms;

    Abstract : It has been known for a long time that the clinical manifestations of urinary tract infections (UTI) differ markedly between individuals, ranging from a sometimes beneficial, asymptomatic state to life threatening infections. This variability in clinical manifestation can be explained in part by the arsenal of virulence factors of the bacteria but the predisposition of the patient is equally important. READ MORE

  2. 2. Mechanisms of microbial-host interaction during asymptomatic bacteriuria

    Author : Jenny Grönberg Hernandez; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Asymptomatic bacteriuria; Urinary tract infection; Escherichia coli 83972; IRF3; TLR4; Evolution; host response; promoter polymorphisms; transcription; P fimbriae; Type 1 fimbriae;

    Abstract : Urinary tract infections (UTIs) present an interesting and relevant model for studying microbial adaptation. After establishing significant numbers, the bacteria either cause severe disease, or an asymptomatic carrier state resembling the normal flora at other mucosal sites. READ MORE

  3. 3. Targeting viral induced TSLP - an airway treatment opportunity

    Author : Angelica Brandelius; Respiratorisk immunofarmakologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Respiratory viral infections cause exacerbations of asthma and COPD that cannot be effectively treated today. Thymic Stromal Lymphopoietin (TSLP) is an upstream epithelial cytokine linking the innate and adaptive immune system. Viral stimuli induce epithelial overexpression of TSLP in asthma and COPD. 4. 4. Immuno-regulatory dynamics of non-structural protein 1 of avian influenza A viruses : IFN-β, NF-κB and AP-1 perspectives

    Author : Muhammad Munir; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The type I interferon (IFN-α/β) system represents the first line of defense against influenza A viruses, and is mainly mediated by the interferon regulatory factors 3/7 (IRF3/7), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and activator protein 1 (AP-1) transcription factors. Therefore, the non-structural protein 1 (NS1) of influenza A viruses has intrinsic abilities to disarm the host cell IFN system, and as a consequence is deeply connected to influenza virus pathogenicity and virulence. 5. 5. The role of interferons in the resistance to infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae

    Author : Christian Trumstedt; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Chlamydia pneumoniae is an obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen that infects the respiratory tract in human. IFN-gamma is an essential cytokine for the immune response triggered to limit infection with C. pneumoniae. C. READ MORE
