  1. 1. Satellite and ground based observations of massive star forming regions

    Author : Henrik Olofsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; abundances - ISM; ISM; clouds - ISM; jets and outflows - ISM; ISM - Submillimeter; molecules - Radio lines;

    Abstract : Results from submm/mm radio astronomical observations, using the astronomy/-aeronomy satellite Odin and the 20m telescope at the Onsala Space Observatory, are presented. Analysis of spectroscopic data of interstellar rotational emission lines from gaseous H2O residing in giant molecular clouds (GMCs), reveal important new clues about the chemistry and spatial distribution of water molecules in these regions, including estimates of the water abundance in molecular outflows associated with massive star formation. 2. 2. Studies in Molecular Astrophysics and Astrobiology

    Author : Eva Wirström; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Submillimeter; Radio lines: ISM; Astrobiology; ISM: individual objects: Orion KL; Molecular data; ISM: molecules;

    Abstract : The molecules of the interstellar medium (ISM) can be used as probes of the physical conditions in a range of different types of interstellar environment, for example star forming regions. The first chapters of this thesis describe the theory and the observational techniques used to study the rotational transition emission from, and the present knowledge of, these molecules. READ MORE

  3. 3. Molecular observations of obscured galaxy nuclei

    Author : Niklas Falstad; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Galaxies: nuclei; Galaxies: ISM; Infrared: galaxies; ISM: Molecules; Submillimeter: galaxies;

    Abstract : It is becoming evident that some (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ((U)LIRGs) contain compact obscured nuclei (CONs) where luminosities in excess of 10^9 L☉  emerge from inside dusty regions smaller than 100 pc in diameter. Due to the obscured nature of these objects, their inner regions are hidden from examination using optical or infrared lines. READ MORE

  4. 4. Water and hydroxyl in luminous infrared galaxies: Spectroscopic observations and modelling

    Author : Niklas Falstad; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ISM: molecules; Galaxies: individual: Zw 049.057; Line: formation; Galaxies: ISM; Submillimeter: galaxies; Infrared: galaxies;

    Abstract : Many luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) contain compact obscured nuclei (CONs) where luminosities in excess of 10^9 Lsun emerge from inside dusty regions smaller than 100 pc in diameter. Due to the obscuring material in these regions, the nature of the nuclear power source cannot be determined using direct observations in the optical or IR. READ MORE

  5. 5. Astrochemical Investigations of Complex Organics in Cold Molecular Cloud Cores

    Author : Tadeus Carl; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; astrobiology; astrochemistry; ISM – molecular clouds; ISM – molecules; dark clouds;

    Abstract : Astrochemistry is the study of the formation and evolution of molecules in the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Milky Way and other galaxies. Molecules start to accumulate in the coldest and densest regions of the ISM, namely molecular clouds, and as of this date, 307 interstellar molecules are identified. READ MORE
