1. Advancing Evolutionary Biology: Genomics, Bayesian Statistics, and Machine Learning
Abstract : During the recent decades the field of evolutionary biology has entered the era of big data, which has transformed the field into an increasingly computational discipline. In this thesis I present novel computational method developments, including their application in empirical case studies. READ MORE

2. Phylogeny and Taxonomy of Subfamily Zygophylloideae (Zygophyllaceae) with Special Reference to the Genus Fagonia
Abstract : Members of Zygophylloideae are shrubs, shrublets and herbs of arid and semiarid areas of almost all continents, and many of the species are major components of the vegetation in their areas of distribution. A phylogenetic analysis of Zygophylloideae based on noncoding trnL plastid DNA sequences and morphological data, indicates that the currently recognised genera Augea, Tetraena, and Fagonia, are embedded in Zygophyllum. 3. Ecology and Conservation of the Baltic Proper Harbour Porpoise
Abstract : The Baltic Proper harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) population is listed by IUCN as Critically Endangered, but conservation action has been lacking for decades, partly due to very limited knowledge on important ecological parameters such as distribution range and abundance. This thesis provides some of the information needed for implementing effective conservation. READ MORE

4. Broadening the perspective on seafood production: Life cycle thinking and fisheries management
Abstract : Decisions made by fisheries managers strongly influence the overall resource use and environmental impacts associated with the seafood product from capture fisheries. These findings come from Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), a method that aims at quantifying all relevant resource use and environmental impacts throughout the life cycle of a product. READ MORE

5. Food Webs, Models and Species Extinctions in a Stochastic Environment
Abstract : In light of the current global mass extinction of species, ecologists are facing great challenges. In order to reverse the path towards additional extinctions early warning systems to guide management actions need to be developed. READ MORE
