  1. 1. Desert Plants and Deserted Islands : Systematics and Ethnobotany in Caryophyllaceae

    Author : Anneleen Kool; Mats Thulin; Gudrun Kadereit; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; BEAST; Corrigiola; DNA barcoding; Morocco; Pollichia; Polycarpon; Polycarpaea; RAxML; Sanctambrosia; Spergula; Spergularia; Sphaerocoma;

    Abstract : Background. Caryophyllaceae is a large and cosmopolitic flowering plant family, however the systematics of many of its basal groups has been unclear, due to a lack of unambiguous morphology. Some members of Caryophyllaceae are used medicinally, e.g. READ MORE

  2. 2. Data Analysis and Next Generation Sequencing : Applications in Microbiology

    Author : Nicolas Innocenti; Erik Aurell; Mogens Jensen; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; RNA-seq; tagRNA-seq; primary and processed RNA; Enterococcus faecalis; Complex transcription; Metagenomics; 5 tagRACE; minimal absent words; compressed sensing; metagenomics; bacterial community reconstruction; Biologisk fysik; Biological Physics;

    Abstract : Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is a new technology that has revolutionized the way we study living organisms. Where previously only a few genes could be studied at a time through targeted direct probing, NGS offers the possibility to perform measurements for a whole genome at once. READ MORE

  3. 3. Population Differentiation in Solidago virgaurea along Altitudinal Gradients

    Author : Anna Bergsten; Jon Ågren; Staffan Karlsson; Kari Lehtilä; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; population differentiation; altitudinal gradient; plant nutrient status; resorption efficiency; resorption proficiency; flowering phenology; countergradient variation; reproductive effort; flower production; cost of reproduction; Biology; Biologi; Other biology; Övrig biologi; Ecological Botany; Ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : Altitudinal gradients offer attractive opportunities for studies of population differentiation in response to environmental heterogeneity. In this thesis, I examined population differentiation along altitudinal gradients by combining common-garden experiments with field studies and experiments in alpine, subalpine and boreal populations of the perennial herb Solidago virgaurea. 4. 4. Functional studies of plant hexokinases and development of genetic methods in the moss Physcomitrella patens

    Author : Mikael Ulfstedt; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In the field of biology, model systems are frequently used for practical reasons. Model organisms possess several features that make them easy to work with in a laboratory setting. In addition they usually have a host of established genetic tools that have been developed by the research community. READ MORE

  5. 5. Mixture toxicity of pesticides and biological effects in agricultural streams : field and laboratory studies

    Author : Jenny Rydh Stenström; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The main objective of this thesis was to examine pesticide mixture toxicity and its effects on aquatic biota in agricultural streams. This was accomplished by (1) calculating the ΣTUs for algae and Daphnia magna and a pesticide toxicity index (PTI) based on water quality standards (WQS) for long-term monitoring data (2002-2010), (2) by performing algal inhibition tests with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, using both collected in situ water samples and reconstituted water spiked with field-observed pesticide mixtures, and (3) by studying seasonal changes in macroinvertebrate and diatom communities during 2008 in four agricultural streams and determine a set of community-based metrics such as species richness, diversity, ASPT, SPEAR and IPS.
