  1. 1. The Role of Microvascular Pericytes in the Generation of Pro-fibrotic Connective Tissue Cells : Investigations in vitro and in Reactive Tissues in vivo

    Author : Jakob Karén; Christian Sundberg; Gunilla Westergren-Thorsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pericyte fibroblast differentiation fibrosis; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; Medical Biochemistry; Medicinsk biokemi; Cellforskning; Cell Research; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Pericytes are cells of mesenchymal origin located on the abluminal side, juxtapositioned to the endothelial cells in capillaries, venules and small arterioles. They are important for maintaining vessel integrity in resting tissues as well as the formation and stabilization of new vessels. READ MORE

  2. 2. Assessment of eosinophil degranulation in allergic diseases and experimental models

    Author : Monika Malm-Erjefält; Avdelningen för klinisk kemi och farmakologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; blood; histochemistry; cytochemistry; tissue culture; Histologi; cytokemi; histokemi; vävnadskultur; animal morphology; Animal anatomy; Djurs anatomi och morfologi; Haematology; cytoplasmic granules ; Hematologi; Respiratory system; extracellulära vätskor; Andningsorganen; toxikologi; farmaci; farmakognosi; Farmakologi; toxicology; pharmacy; pharmacognosy; Klinisk biologi; Pharmacological sciences; Histology; cell separation ; mice; animal models ; biological marker ; transmission electron microscopy allergy; cell degranulation ; Clinical biology; extracellular fluids; eosinophils;

    Abstract : In allergic disorders, the eosinophilic granulocytes migrate to affected tissues and release granule proteins with cytotoxic, immunoregulatory, and remodeling-promoting properties. Given that degranulation is reflected by a loss in eosinophil granule density of living cells, or by cell membrane rupture and release of intact granules, these morphological changes may represent a biomarker of the allergic disease. Abstract : Diabetes is a rapidly growing disease with 415 million affected adults worldwide. The pancreatic endocrine cells, most importantly the insulin producing β-cells, play an important role in regulating blood glucose homeostasis. READ MORE

  4. 4. Intestinal permeability : a parameter of mucosal dysfunction

    Author : Pål Lundin; Biologiska institutionen; []

    Abstract : The gastrointestinal tract has two opposing functions; to absorb nutrients and electrolytes, and to act as a barrier towards hazardous and non-nutritional substances. In the present thesis the barrier function of the gastrointestinal tract was studied in animal models in vivo, in situ and in vitro. READ MORE

  5. 5. Novel Regulators of Brain Tumor Development : – From neural stem cell differentiation to in vivo models

    Author : Anqi Xiong; Karin Forsberg Nilsson; Joanna Phillips; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; glioma; medulloblastoma; neural stem cell; heparanase; NRBP2; dog models; susceptibility;

    Abstract : Malignant brain tumors are diseases with poor prognosis and/or severe long-term side effects of treatment. This thesis aimed to discover novel regulators in brain tumor development, based on studying neural stem cell and progenitor cell (NSPC) differentiation and using animal models to introduce new insights to mechanisms of human brain tumors.
