11. Alpha-1-microglobulin, heme-binding protein, reductase and antioxidant
Abstract : This thesis describes structural and functional studies of alpha-1-microglobulin (a1m), a 26 kDa plasma and tissue protein that is evolutionarily well-conserved and belongs to the lipocalin superfamily. The lipocalins are polypeptides of 160-190-amino acids that are folded into an 8-stranded beta-barrel forming a pocket with a hydrophobic interior. READ MORE

12. Proteome-wide analysis of severe bacterial infections. The battle between host and pathogen
Abstract : The pathogenesis of severe infectious diseases is a complex interplay between the host and the pathogen. The development and progression of a disease encompasses a multitude of processes, which balance between host-damage and host-protection. READ MORE

13. Membrane traffic in neutrophils and neutrophil-like cells
Abstract : The neutrophil constitutes the first line of defence against invading organisms and its primary function is to recognize, phagocytose and kill intruding microorganisms. In this thesis, the membrane traffic in neutrophils and neutrophil-like cells was studied. Non-opsonised S. READ MORE

14. Inflammation, kinins, and kinin receptors
Abstract : Evidence is accumulating that the pathogenesis of many diseases is triggered by inappropriate inflammatory responses. These serious complications may occur when the tightly regulated inflammatory network is out of balance and it is now clear that this can eventually cause substantial harm to own cells and tissues. 15. Interactions between β-haemolytic streptococci and the human host. Heart, skin and beyond
Abstract : Group C and G streptococci (GCS/GGS) and group A streptococci (GAS) belong to β-haemolytic streptococci (BHS). GCS/GGS can further be species determined to S. dysgalactiae, whereas S. pyogenes are GAS. READ MORE
