  1. 6. Mechanisms and Therapeutic Interventions of Instant Blood-Mediated Inflammatory Reaction (IBMIR)

    Author : Helena Johansson; Bo Nilsson; Olle Korsgren; Kristina Nilsson-Ekdahl; Tomas Lindahl; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Immunology; Diabetes; Islet transplantation; Islets of Langerhans; Coagulation activation; Complement activation; IBMIR; Tissue factor; Low molecular weight dextran sulfate; Immunologi;

    Abstract : Intraportal transplantation of isolated islets of Langerhans is a procedure approaching clinical acceptance as a treatment for patients with type I diabetes mellitus. One major problem with this treatment is that large amounts of cells are lost at the time of infusion into the portal vein, resulting in a low level of engraftment of the islets. READ MORE

  2. 7. Platelet activation and cytokine release during experimental extracorporeal circulation

    Author : Katrin Adrian; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : ECMO; blood-biomaterial interaction; platelets; platelet activation; cytokines; systemic inflammatory response;

  3. 8. Interactions between whole blood and TiO₂ surfaces with focus on adhesion and activation of PMN granulocytes

    Author : Cecilia Eriksson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; titanium; TiO2; surface roughness; oxide thickness; wettability; whole blood; inflammation; wound healing; platelets; PMN granulocytes; adhesion; activation; receptor expression; respiratory burst.;

    Abstract : Foreign materials come in contact with the human body more and more frequently. The surgical procedure of inserting an implant into the body will cause bleeding, evoke an inflammatory response and initiate a healing process, ultimately leading to acceptance or rejection of the material. 4. 9. Systemic inflammatory activation during cardiac Surgery. Influence of cardiopulmonary bypass management and patient factors

    Author : Martin Westerberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : cardiopulmonary bypass; inflammatory response; coagulation; CABG; cardiotomy suction; cytokines;

    Abstract : Cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass is accompanied by a prominent systemic inflammatory and hemostatic activation, which may contribute to postoperative complications. Aims: To investigate if selection of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) system and management of cardiotomy suction (CTS) and mediastinal shed blood (MSB) affect systemic inflammatory response. READ MORE

  5. 10. Inflammatory responses in minor and major surgical procedures

    Author : Annette Schmidt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; inflammatory response; surgery; cytokines; complement split products;

    Abstract : Surgical procedures promote an inflammatory response, correlating to the extent of the procedure performed and influencing outcome after surgery. The aims of the thesis were to investigate factors modulating the inflammatory response perioperatively and to evaluate cell salvage for indications so far not accepted in clinical practice. READ MORE
