1. Sampling uncertainties in ensemble weather forecasting
Abstract : The aim of ensemble weather forecasting is to provide probability forecasts for the occurrence of meteorological events. The ensembles are constructed by assembling several forecast realisations, each member of the ensemble being constructed to sample the uncertainties in the forecast. READ MORE

2. Multi-Meson Dynamics in Chiral Perturbation Theory
Abstract : This thesis concerns scattering of light mesons in the case where the number of external particles exceeds four (that is, three or more particles in the initial or final state), calculated using chiral perturbation theory. This is both of theoretical interest in the study of scattering amplitudes, and relevant for systems of three or more pions simulated using lattice quantum chromodynamics. 3. On optimization of natural convection flows
Abstract : Two different techniques are presented for enhancing the thermal performance of natural convection cooled heat sinks. The physics is described by solving the conjugate heat transfer problem with a spectral element method. The temperature distribution is computed in two sub-domains, whose solution is then conjugated. 4. Diffuse Optical Spectroscopy and Imaging of Turbid Media
Abstract : This thesis deals with optical spectroscopy and imaging of complex and strongly scattering turbid media. Focus is mainly placed on three topics, being i) diffuse optical spectroscopy of choroidal tumors, ii) gas spectroscopy in scattering materials using the GASMAS (gas in scattering media absorption spectroscopy) technique, and iii) luminescence diffuse optical imaging and tomography of tissues. 5. Characterization of habenular neurocircuitry. A potential novel target for treating depression
Abstract : In the last decade, there has been an explosion of interest within the psychiatric research community in a small diencephalic brain region called the habenula. It has been uncovered as a key regulator of monoaminergic transmission, playing a fundamental role in decision making, behavioral flexibility, inhibitory control, sleep, pain and analgesia. READ MORE
