    Abstract : Running as a form of physical activity continues to grow in popularity and is accompanied by a number of health benefits, but one of the greatest threats that challenge these benefits is running-related injuries. The overall aim of this thesis is to identify the proportion of runners who sustain a running-related injury (incidence), possible reasons as to why they sustain these injuries (risk factors) and, finally, whether general injury-prevention guidelines can be effective in reducing the number of running-related injuries in recreational runners.     Abstract : Despite wide application of community-based programmes to prevent injuries and promote health over the last 25 years, there is a paucity of evaluations from which to obtain evidence regarding the effectiveness and critical factors contributing to achieving effectiveness of these programmes. Research on community-based injury prevention programmes thus far has been driven by the question “does it work?” However, merely establishing whether a programme works or not provides insufficient information to generate new knowledge about these programmes.
