  1. 1. Prostate Cancer Diagnosis : experimental and Clinical Studies With HRMAS NMR Spectroscopy

    Author : Katarina Stenman; Katrine Åhlström-Riklund; Anders Bergh; Peter Lundberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostate cancer; PCa; HRMAS NMR; MRSI; metabolomics; Gleason score; citrate; inositol; choline; Krebs cycle; PUFA; omega-6; omega-3; Diagnostic radiology; Diagnostisk radiologi; Radiology; radiologi;

    Abstract : A few abnormal cells found in a small piece of prostate tissue are most consequential for a man’s future. The prevalence of prostate cancer (PCa) is increasing globally. READ MORE

  2. 2. Signal transduction in the brain : modulation of receptor-mediated inositol phospholipid breakdown by potassium and fluoride ions

    Author : Gunnar Tiger; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Inositol phospholipid breakdown; muscarinic receptors; potassium; fluoride; rat brain; pig brain;

    Abstract : Neurotransmitter receptor types mediating the generation of intracellular signals are of two types; ligand-gated ion channels and G protein coupled receptors. The effector enzyme phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C (PLC) is modulated by stimulation of G protein coupled receptors, leading to an increased breakdown of inositol phospholipids ("Ptdlns breakdown"). 3. 3. Oscillatory Ca2+ signaling in glucose-stimulated murine pancreatic β-cells : Modulation by amino acids, glucagon, caffeine and ryanodine

    Author : Meftun Ahmed; Per Lindström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; pancreatic β-cells; islets of Langerhans; glucose; Ca2 oscillations; Ca2 transients; potassium; ryanodine; caffeine; glucagon; cAMP; inositol 1; 4; 5-trisphosphate; fura-2; glycine; alanine; arginine; Ca2 channels; rats; lean mice; ob ob mice; leptin; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : Oscillations in cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) is the key signal in glucose-stimulated β-cells governing pulsatile insulin release. The glucose response of mouse β-cells is often manifested as slow oscillations and rapid transients of [Ca2+] i. READ MORE

  4. 4. Novel functions of SMG-1 in carcinogenesis

    Author : Evgenia Gubanova; Thomas Helleday; Andrei Gudkov; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; molekylärgenetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract : Damage to DNA can cause mutations leading to cancer, and the DNA damage response (DDR), leading to transient cell-cycle arrest, DNA repair, senescence and apoptosis, plays a role in preventing tumor formation. At the same time, agents that damage DNA are used as anticancer therapy. READ MORE

  5. 5. Inhibition of Calcium and Zinc Absorption by Phytate in Man Methodological Studies and Hydrothermal Processing of Cereals to Improve Absorption

    Author : Kerstin Fredlund; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; barley; wheat; rye; 65Zn; oats; zinc absorption; whole grains; InsP6; hydrothermal processing; calcium absorption; rice; radionuclide technique; 47Ca; extrinsic labelling; phytate; hydrothermal treatment; myo-inositol; calcium retention; whole-body counting;

    Abstract : A mathematical model based on measurements in a whole-body counter described the retention of calcium in the human body. It was shown that the relative retention of intravenous and orally administered 47Ca in all subjects (n = 10 - 11) were well described by fitting a simple function of time with two free parameters to a few whole-body measurements after day 6, when the unabsorbed calcium had been excreted.
