  1. 1. Building the city from the inside : architecture and urban transformation in Los Angeles, Porto, and Las Vegas

    Author : Hannes Frykholm; Daniel Koch; Catharina Gabrielsson; Roemer van Toorn; Albena Yaneva; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Interior urbanism; architecture; urban transformation; threshold; lobby; temporality; labor; atmosphere; aesthetics; estetik; design; design; Stadsbyggnad;

    Abstract : Positioned in the research field of “interior urbanism” (Rice, 2016), this thesis considers entrance situations that occur between buildings and cities in order to develop new ways of investigating the relationship between architecture and urban transformation. From the main research question—How does architecture mediate urban transformation?—the thesis focuses on experience-driven narratives about the city (Pine & Gilmore, 2011). READ MORE

  2. 2. Dynamic ultrasonography in neonatal hip instability and acetabular dysplasia

    Author : Thröstur Finnbogason; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The clinical hip examination, although highly sensitive in expert hands in detecting neonatal hip instability, can lead to considerable overtreatment. Ultrasound is increasingly being used to complement the clinical examination in assessing neonatal hip instability and acetabular dysplasia, often leading to increased treatment rate. READ MORE

  3. 3. Cases of coupled vibrations and prametric instability in rotating machines

    Author : Jean-Claude Luneno; Ilmar Santos; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hållfasthetslära; Solid Mechanics;

    Abstract : The principal task in this research project was to analyse the causes and consequences of coupled vibrations and parametric instability in hydropower rotors; where both horizontal and vertical machines are involved. Vibration is a well-known undesirable behavior of dynamical systems characterised by persistent periodic, quasi-periodic or chaotic motions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Drift and Mirror Modes in Magnetized Plasmas

    Author : Ingmar Sandberg; Padma Shukla; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; tokamak plasma; drift waves; space plasma; mirror instability.; Astronomi; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik; Space and Plasma Physics; rymd- och plasmafysik;

    Abstract : Low frequency plasma instabilities driven by plasma inhomogeneity and velocity anisotropies are major candidates for the explanation of various phenomena observed in fusion and space plasmas. For low-β fusion plasma, the influence of plasma rotation and finite ion temperature on the structure and the type of toroidal drift eigenmodes in tokamaks is investigated rigorously, including the effects induced by the toroidal geometry such as the coupling mode, the radial variation of plasma rotation velocity and the magnetic shear. 5. 5. Data-driven methods for real-time dynamic stability assessment and control

    Author : Hannes Hagmar; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Machine learning; Security assessment; Neural networks; Optimal control; Dynamic voltage security margin; Voltage instability prediction; Voltage stability; Deep reinforcement learning;

    Abstract : Electric power systems are becoming increasingly complex to operate; a trend driven by an increased demand for electricity, large-scale integration of renewable energy resources, and new system components with power electronic interfaces. In this thesis, a new real-time monitoring and control tool that can support system operators to allow more efficient utilization of the transmission grid has been developed. READ MORE
