  1. 1. Aspects on wall properties of the brachial artery in man : with special reference to SLE and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus

    Author : Niclas Bjarnegård; Toste Länne; Reinhard Volkmann; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Arterial wall; atherosclerotic; brachial artery BA ; type 1 diabetes; ulse wave velocity PWV ; pulse wave analysis PWA ; intima-media thickness IMT ; nitrate mediated dilatation NMD ; Diabetology; Diabetologi;

    Abstract : The mechanical properties of the arterial wall are of great importance for blood pressure regulation and cardiac load. With increasing age, large arteries are affected by increased wall stiffness. READ MORE

  2. 2. Murine insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus : a model for disease development and protection

    Author : Björn Pilström; Dan Holmberg; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is an autoimmune disease caused by destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreatic Langerhans' islets. This destruction is preceded by an infiltration of mononuclear leukocytes called insulitis. READ MORE

  3. 3. The bank vole (Myodes glareolus) – a novel animal model for the study of diabetes mellitus

    Author : Martin Blixt; Stellan Sandler; Johnny Ludvigsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bank vole; pancreatic islets; diabetes mellitus; hydropic degeneration; proinflammatory cytokine; Diabetology; Diabetologi; Endocrinology; Endokrinologi; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The bank vole (Microtus arvalis) develops glucose intolerance both when kept in captivity and in the wild state. Glucose intolerant bank voles kept in captivity exhibited polydipsia, polyuria, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, islet autoantibodies and a markedly changed islet structure resembling so–called hydropic degeneration. Abstract : This doctoral thesis consists of six studies concerning persons with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). The first two deal with relationships between life events, social support and metabolic control (HbA1C) over a two year period. For the female subjects, results obtained for this period were inconsistent. READ MORE

    Abstract : Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. The new WHO criteria for classification of diabetes takes into account also clinical stages dividing the diabetic patients into noninsulin requiring (NIR), insulin requiring for control (IRC) and insulin requiring for survival (IRS) subgroups.
