  1. 21. Pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes -role of defects in insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity

    Author : Devjit Tripathy; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetology; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi; Endocrinology; secreting systems; Calpain 10 gene; genetics of type 2 diabetes; MODY; Endogenous glucose production; Disposition index; Botnia clamp; IGT; IFG; HOMA; insulin sensitivity; insulin secretion;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes is characterised by defects in insulin sensitivity, insulin secretion and increased endogenous glucose production. The relative contribution of each of these defects remains controversial. READ MORE

  2. 22. Glucose- and hypoxia-regulated insulin gene expression

    Author : Linda Tillmar; Jens Höiriis Nielsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; islet; beta-cell; insulin; mRNA stability; PTB; glucose; hypoxia; mTOR; p70s6k; ceramide; redox; ROS; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : Although extensively studied, there are still many unanswered questions regarding the exact regulation of insulin gene expression. This is important to further investigate since it will hopefully help us understand the pathophysiology of some types of diabetes. READ MORE

  3. 23. Pulsatile insulin release from single islets of Langerhans

    Author : Johanna Westerlund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; islets of Langerhans; insulin; ELISA; cytoplasmic calcium; oscillations; type 2 diabetes; glucose; diazoxide; potassium; tolbutamide; DNP; antimycin A; iodoacetamide; microfluorometry; fura-2; KATP channels; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : Insulin release from single islets of Langerhans is pulsatile. The secretory activities of the islets in the pancreas are coordinated resulting in plasma insulin oscillations. Nutrients amplitude-regulate the insulin pulses without influencing their frequency. READ MORE

  4. 24. Left ventricular hypertrophy and the insulin resistance syndrome

    Author : Johan Sundström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Left ventricular hypertrophy; insulin; glucose; lipids; mortality; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Geriatrics; geriatrik;

    Abstract : Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and the insulin resistance syndrome are common conditions associated with a markedly increased cardiovascular risk. In a fairly large prospective longitudinal study of men from the general population, we found that an unfavorable serum fatty acid profile and components of the insulin resistance syndrome such as dyslipidemia, obesity and hypertension at age 50 predicted the prevalence of LVH at age 70. 5. 25. GH, IGF-1 and insulin in the regulation of lipid and lipoprotein metabolism

    Author : Fredrik Frick; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Growth-hormone; insulin-like growth factor-I; insulin; lipoprotein lipase; adipose tissue; muscle tissue; VLDL secretion;

    Abstract : It is well known that growth hormone (GH) has profound effects on lipid and lipoprotein metabolism. Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) is believed to mediate some of the effects of GH via endocrine and paracrine mechanisms. Moreover, both GH and IGF-I are known to influence insulin secretion.
