  1. 1. Genetic subtypes in unicellular intestinal parasites with special focus on Blastocystis

    Author : Joakim Forsell; Birgitta Evengård; Margareta Granlund; Tom van Gool; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Intestinal parasites; Blastocystis; Entamoeba; Giardia; molecular detection; PCR; subtype; intestinal microbiota; Sweden; Zanzibar; Clinical Bacteriology; klinisk bakteriologi;

    Abstract : The development of molecular tools for detection and typing of unicellular intestinal parasites has revealed genetic diversities in species that were previously considered as distinct entities. Of great importance is the genetic distinction found between the pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica and the non-pathogenic Entamoeba dispar, two morphologically indistinguishable species. READ MORE

    Abstract : Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from the Baltic Sea suffer from a reproduction disease known as the M74-syndrome. Newly hatched fry develop nerve disorders and die between 3-5 days after the first symptoms are seen. This is a maternally transmitted disease that is casued by a thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. Abstract : As sequencing technologies advance genome studies are becoming a basic tool for studying an organism, and with more genomes available comparative genomics is maturing into a powerful tool for biological research. This thesis demonstrates the strength of a comparative genomics approach on a group of understudied eukaryotes, the diplomonads. READ MORE

  5. 5. Molecular Diagnosis and Characterization of Two Intestinal Protozoa : Entamoeba histolytica & Giardia intestinalis

    Author : Marianne Lebbad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []

    Abstract : Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia intestinalis are two of the most important and most widespread diarrhea-related parasitic protozoa in the world. Approximately 1200 1500 cases of Giardia and 200 400 cases of Entamoeba are reported each year in Sweden, whereas the corresponding numbers are much higher in developing countries like Nicaragua.
