  1. 1. Experimental and Clinical Necrotizing Enterocolitis

    Author : Niclas Högberg; Heléne Engstrand Lilja; Agneta Nordenskjöld; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Necrotizing; Enterocolitis; Ischemia; Microdialysis; Intraluminal; I-FABP; Kirurgi; särskilt barnkirurgi; Pediatric Surgery;

    Abstract : Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a severe inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract with high morbidity and mortality, affects primarily preterm infants. The diagnosis represents a challenging task, and no biomarker has been found to aid early diagnosis with high accuracy. READ MORE

  2. 2. Modeling of Intraluminal Surfaces of Thoracic Aortas

    Author : Johan Bondesson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; aneurysm; TEVAR; bird-beaking; cardiac pulsatility; geometric modeling; surface curvature; endograft; stereolithographic surface; dissection; Thoracic aorta;

    Abstract : Vascular diseases are getting more and more common as a result of modern-day lifestyle and the fact that the population is getting older. One of the newest treatments for vascular diseases such as aneurysms and dissections is endovascular repair with endografting. READ MORE

  3. 3. Significance of intraluminal thrombus in abdominal aortic aneurysm

    Author : Maggie Folkesson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Most AAAs contain an intraluminal thrombus (ILT) and the volume of the ILT correlates with aneurysm size. The thrombus-covered wall is a common site for rupture after bleeding into the ILT. The hypothesis for this thesis was generated when Kazi et al discovered differences in AAA wall between ILT covered and ILT free aortic wall. READ MORE

  4. 4. Methodological studies of eicosanoid enzyme gene expression in vascular endothelium exposed to biomechanical stress

    Author : Roya Doroudi; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; prostanoids; endothelium; quantitative RT-PCR; perfusion model; shear stress; intraluminal pressure; immediate-early genes;

    Abstract : Prostaglandins are the major eicosanoids synthesized by vascular endothelial cells, and the vasculature is an important target organ for their bioactive metabolites. In vitro studies have shown that biomechanical forces are important regulators of vascular expression of prostanoid enzymes and release of metabolites. READ MORE

  5. 5. Effects of Biomechanical Stress on Gene Regulation in Vascular Cells

    Author : Maria Carlström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : shear stress; intraluminal pressure; endothelium; gene expression; DNA microarray; real-time RT-PCR; reference genes; smooth muscle cells; P2 receptors; TNF-alpha; urokinase-type plasminogen activator;

    Abstract : The vascular vessel wall is constantly exposed to biomechanical forces, such as shear and tensile stress. Biomechanical forces are important for several physiological and pathological processes and have been shown to regulate a number of fundamental vascular functions, such as vascular tone and remodeling processes.
