  1. 11. Aspects of neonatal intensive care and anesthesia : Thermal balance and respiratory management

    Author : Victoria Karlsson; Johan Ågren; Lena Hellström-Westas; Filip Fredén; Valeria Perez de Sa; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neonatal; anesthesia; kangaroo-mother-care; skin-to-skin care; carbon dioxide;

    Abstract : This thesis is based on four articles originating from three studies conducted in the neonatal intensive care unit and the children’s operating deparment at Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden.The overall aim was to obtain new knowledge about thermal balance and care environment in extremely preterm infants during skin-to-skin care (SSC), evaluate different methods of intraoperative monitoring of carbon dioxide (CO2), and to investigate how different levels of inhaled oxygen affect infants’ oxygenation during anesthesia and surgery. 2. 12. Hypnosis monitoring during general anaesthesia : with focus on awareness

    Author : Andreas Ekman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Hypnosis monitoring; electroencephalogram; BIS; AAI; neuromuscular block;

    Abstract : An objective measure of the hypnotic component of general anaesthesia has been sought for decades. The electroencephalogram (EEG) was early recognized as a possible useful intraoperative monitor when the effects of anaesthetic drugs on human EEG recordings were noted. READ MORE

  3. 13. Impact of the upper gut on body fluid regulation and blood pressure in man - potential involvement of a locally expressed renin-angiotensin system

    Author : Peter Hallersund; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : angiotensin; stomach; duodenum; sodium; salt; diuresis; appetite; gastric bypass; blood pressure;

    Abstract : This thesis explores the role of the upper gut in the regulation of diuresis and blood pressure control in relation to the novel finding of a mucosa-located renin-angiotensin system (RAS). RAS is a regulatory super-system vital for body fluid homeostasis and blood pressure control. READ MORE

  4. 14. Clinical and physiological consequences of preoxygenation using high-flow nasal oxygen in emergency anaesthesia

    Author : Albin Sjöblom; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Airway management;

    Abstract : Emergency anaesthesia is usually performed using a rapid sequence induction technique. The incidence of desaturation during rapid sequence induction is high, and preoxygenation prolongs the safe apnoea time. READ MORE

  5. 15. Surfactant metabolism in the newborn : the impact of ventilation strategy and lung disease

    Author : Kajsa Bohlin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Surface active agents; pulmonary surfactant; respiratory distress syndrome; stable isotope; artificial respiration; continuous positive airway pressure; metabolism; rabbit; compliance; preterm; newborn;

    Abstract : Developmental deficiency in pulmonary surfactant leads to respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in preterm infants, but all newborns may have impaired surfactant metabolism secondary to lung disease or ventilator induced lung injury. Exogenous surfactant treatment is usually administered in conjunction with mechanical ventilation. READ MORE
