  1. 11. Structure and function of MMP-2 and its inhibitor TIMP-2

    Author : Ari Tuuttila; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Metalloproteinases; MMP-2; TIMP-2; extracellular matrix; crystallography; protein structure;

    Abstract : Animal cells secrete various enzymes capable of degrading the extracellular matrix. One of the most studied groups of these are the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). This group of zinc containing endopeptidases consists at present of 26 members and this number is still increasing. READ MORE

  2. 12. T Cell Ontogeny and Effector Functions in Galphai2-deficient Colitis

    Author : Malin Bjursten; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : colitis; T cells; Galphai2- - mice; thymus; pro-inflammatory cytokines; alpha4 integrin;

    Abstract : Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) comprising Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis is a disease that affects millions of people worldwide, especially in northern countries such as Sweden, and is characterised by chronic uncontrolled inflammation of the intestinal mucosa. It is the general belief that multiple factors such as genetic and environmental aspects are involved in disease pathogenesis. READ MORE

  3. 13. Examining the prostate stroma and vasculature : importance and potential as targets for therapy

    Author : Anna Johansson; Anders Bergh; Arne Östman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostate cancer; castration therapy; vasculature; stroma; the angiopoietins; the PDGF-receptors; mast cells; Pathology; Patologi;

    Abstract : Background. Recent studies in cancer research have focused on the reciprocal interaction between cancer cells and their microenvironment. Tumour growth is angiogenesis dependent and the rate of angiogenesis correlates with a poor prognosis in many different cancers. READ MORE

  4. 14. Permutation Patterns, Continued Fractions, and a Group Determined by an Ordered Set

    Author : Anders Claesson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : We present six articles: In the first and second article we give the first few results on generalized pattern avoidance, focusing on patterns of type (1,2) or (2,1). There are twelve such patterns, and they fall into three classes with respect to being equidistributed. We use 1-23, 1-32, and 2-13 as representatives for these classes. READ MORE

  5. 15. Regulation of Hedgehog signalling during development and carcinogenesis

    Author : Marie Fiaschi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Hedgehog (Hh) signalling is one of the most important signalling networks in the body and, when miss-regulated, has been implicated in many human tumours, particularly that of skin (Basal Cell Carcinoma, BCC) and brain (medulloblastoma). BCC most commonly arises due to mutations in the gene sequence of the Hh receptor protein PATCHED1 (PTCH1). READ MORE
