    University dissertation from Göteborg : Göteborg University

    Author : Mille Milakovic; Göteborgs universitet.; Gothenburg University.; [2005]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; goitre; thyroid volume; ultrasonography; urinary iodine; TpoAb; TSH; iodine supplementation; radioiodine uptake; scintigraphy; XRF;

    Abstract : Iodine is essential in the synthesis of the vital hormones of the thyroid gland. On a worldwide basis, iodine deficiency is the global most important cause of thyroid disease. READ MORE

  2. 2. Controlling iodine deficiency disorders Studies for program management in sub-Saharan Africa

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Stefan Peterson; Uppsala universitet.; [2000]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obstetrics and gynaecology; Iodine deficiency; iodized oil; cassava; thiocyanate; iodized salt; cost-effectiveness; epidemiology; monitoring; Obstetrik och kvinnosjukdomar; MEDICINE Surgery Obstetrics and women s diseases; MEDICIN Kirurgi Obstetrik och kvinnosjukdomar; pediatrik; Pediatrics;

    Abstract : Studies were performed to improve iodine deficiency control programs. Goitre rates and cassava processing practices were compared in three Central African Republic (CAR) populations. Short-cuts in cassava processing were associated with elevated urinary thiocyanate and increased goitre rates, suggesting a goitrogenic effect in one population. READ MORE

  3. 3. Hypothyroidism and Pregnancy

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Michaela Granfors; Uppsala universitet.; [2015]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; phosphodiesterase 8B; recurrent miscarriage; single nucleotide polymorphism; thyroid; guidelines; hypothyroidism; pregnancy; survey; thyroid testing; screening; iodine; iodine deficiency; median urinary iodine concentration; Obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Abstract : Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age. On a global level, iodine deficiency is still the most common cause of hypothyroidism. Also genetic variations, in particular SNP rs4704397 in the PDE8B gene, are responsible for a significant proportion of TSH variations. READ MORE

  4. 4. Iodine-Metal Surface Interactions under Severe Accident Conditions in a Nuclear Power Plant

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Henrik Glänneskog; [2005]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; containment; reactive metals; BWR; adsorption; iodine; radiolysis;

    Abstract : In the event of a severe nuclear reactor accident, iodine will be released from the fuel and eventually enter the containment. Radioactive iodine isotopes constitute both an acute and a long-term threat to humans, owing to its half-life and its accumulation in the thyroid gland. READ MORE

  5. 5. Iodine Isotopes and their Species in Surface Water from the North Sea to the Northeastern Atlantic Ocean

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Peng He; Uppsala universitet.; [2013]

    Abstract : Huge amounts of anthropogenic 129I have been and still are released to the environment through liquid and gaseous discharges from the nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities worldwide and in particular the ones in Europe. Most of this 129I signal has been accumulated in the marine environment which plays a major role in the iodine natural pool. READ MORE
