1. Development Towards Sustainable Ironmaking : The IronArc Process
Abstract : The IronArc process is a novel process for a more sustainable production of liquid pig iron using electricity for heating and hydrocarbons for reduction. This thesis aims to facilitate its use by investigating possible refractory solutions and the gas blowing in the process which is done by a plasma generator. READ MORE

3. A study of micro-particles in the dust and melt at different stages of iron and steelmaking
Abstract : The dust particles generated due to mechanical wear of iron ore pellets and clusters formed in molten stainless steel alloyed with rare earth metals (REM) are considered in this study. Firstly, the influence of the characteristics of iron ore pellets, applied load on a pellet bed and partial reduction of the pellets on the size distribution of the generated dust was investigated. 4. Improving the performance of the blast furnace ironmaking process
Abstract : In order to assist the operators' control activities and to further improve the performance of the blast furnace, efforts have been made to develop models for control of blast furnace operation and improvements of burden quality. The main objectives of the work were to design models for diagnosing and forecasting irregular furnace statuses and for predicting the silicon content of the hot metal, and to study the influence of the fluxes on the melting properties of fluxed pellets. 5. On the use of process integration methods : evaluation of energy and CO2 emission strategies in blast furnace ironmaking and oxygen steelmaking
Abstract : This work deals with sustainable resource utilisation in integrated (iron ore based) steelmaking, with special emphasis on how to analyse process adaptation and developments aiming towards lowering of the emission of greenhouse gases, in particular carbon dioxide (CO2), to the atmosphere. Climate change and management of CO2 are real issues for the steel industry these days. READ MORE
