  1. 1. Efficient sampling of Bayesian posteriors and predictive distributions in χEFT

    Author : Isak Svensson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; chiral effective field theory; Bayesian parameter estimation; nuclear physics; Markov chain Monte Carlo; two-nucleon scattering;

    Abstract : In this thesis I employ Bayesian statistics to quantify parametric and epistemic uncertainties in chiral effective field theories (χEFT) and propagate these forward to predictions of observables in low-energy nuclear physics. Two primary sources of uncertainty---experimental errors and the theoretical error induced by the truncation of the EFT at up to next-to-next-to-leading-order---are modelled and accounted for in the posterior distributions of the unknown low-energy constants (LECs) that govern interaction strengths in χEFT. 2. 2. Elusive Peacemakers : A Bargaining Perspective on Mediation in Internal Armed Conflicts

    Author : Isak Svensson; Mats Hammarström; David Mason; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; mediation; third party; civil war; peace agreement; conflict resolution; negotiated settlement; bargaining; conflict termination; internal conflict; Peace and conflict research; Freds- och konfliktforskning;

    Abstract : This composite dissertation explores mediation in internal armed conflicts from a bargaining perspective. Four separate essays investigate why mediation occurs, why it is successful, and why peace guarantors’ commitments are credible. Essay 1 examines the conditions under which mediation takes place. 3. 3. Extending the reach of uncertainty quantification in nuclear theory

    Author : Isak Svensson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []

    Abstract : The theory of the strong interaction—quantum chromodynamics (QCD)—is unsuited to practical calculations of nuclear observables and approximate models for nuclear interaction potentials are required. In contrast to phenomenological models, chiral effective field theories (χEFTs) of QCD grant a handle on the theoretical uncertainty arising from the truncation of the chiral expansion. READ MORE

  4. 4. Compliance with Territorial Awards : Territorial Concessions, Domestic Constraints, and International Legal Rulings

    Author : David Larsson Gebre-Medhin; Desirée Nilsson; Isak Svensson; Stephen Gent; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; territorial disputes; conflict resolution; territorial concessions; international law; legal dispute resolution; domestic constraints; compliance; Israel; Nigeria; Ethiopia; Taba; Bakassi; Badme; Peace and Conflict Research; Freds- och konfliktforskning;

    Abstract : Under what conditions do states engaged in interstate territorial disputes comply with unfavorable international legal awards? Interstate territorial disputes have proven to be a major threat to international peace and security. Of the available options for the peaceful resolution of territorial claims, legal dispute resolution has proven to be very effective, as states overwhelmingly comply with international awards. 5. 5. International organizations as peacemakers : The evolution and effectiveness of intergovernmental instruments to end civil war

    Author : Magnus Lundgren; Jonas Tallberg; Isak Svensson; Yoram Haftel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; intergovernmental organizations; international organizations; conflict management; conflict resolution; mediation; civil war; armed conflict; institutional design; mediator bias; bargaining theory; Political Science; statsvetenskap;

    Abstract : Across four self-contained essays, this dissertation seeks to identify which features make international organizations (IOs) effective peacemakers in modern civil wars. The first essay introduces an original dataset on the institutional design of 21 peace-brokering IOs between 1945 and 2010. READ MORE
