16. Effects of Enterovirus Infection on Innate Immunity and Beta Cell Function in Human Islets of Langerhans
Abstract : This thesis focuses on enteroviral effects on human pancreatic islets. Most knowledge of viral effects on host cells relies on studies of immortalized cell lines or animal models. The islets represent a fundamentally different and less well studied cellular host. Also, enterovirus has been implicated in the etiology of type 1 diabetes (T1D). READ MORE

17. Clinical, Genetic and Metabolic Characterisation of LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults)
Abstract : Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) comprises about 10% of patients initially diagnosed with type 2 diabetes but who are positive for pancreatic islet antibodies, especially to glutamic acid decarboxylase (GADabs). The present studies focused on clinical, genetic and metabolic characterisation of patients with LADA. READ MORE

18. Markers of Infection in Childhood Autoimmune Diabetes and Related Disorders
Abstract : The main aim of this thesis was to contribute to the knowledge about mechanisms involved in the development of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and other autoimmune diseases in children. Immune markers in relation to genetic propensity in children with autoimmune disease, mainly T1D and a small group of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and thyroiditis (THYR), as well as healthy controls have been studied. 19. Immunogenetic studies in autoimmune endocrine diseases
Abstract : Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disease characterised by Tlymphocyte infiltration of islets of Langerhans with consequent destruction of beta cells. A permissive genetic background is required for the development of the islet autoimmune process. READ MORE

20. Humoral immunity to recombinant human autoantigens in organ-specific autoimmune disease
Abstract : Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and idiopathic Addison's disease are organ-specific autoimmune diseases characterized by the presence of circulating autoantibodies. The role of autoantibodies in the pathogenesis of these diseases is not fully understood, but their presence can be used as a marker for diagnosis and prediction. READ MORE
