  1. 1. Pancreatic Islet Transplantation : Modifications of Islet Properties to Improve Graft Survival

    Author : Sanja Cabric; Olle Korsgren; Bo Nilsson; Peetra Magnusson; Michael Breimer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medicine; Diabetes; islet transplantation; islets of Langerhans; coagulation activation; IBMIR; hirudin; heparin; growth factor; angiogenesis; Medicin;

    Abstract : During the past decade clinical islet transplantation has become a viable strategy for curing type 1 diabetes. The limited supply of organs, together with the requirement for islets from multiple donors to achieve insulin independence, has greatly limited the application of this approach. READ MORE

  2. 2. Disturbed Islet Function and Alterations in Islet Protein Expression

    Author : Henrik Ortsäter; Peter Bergsten; Franz Schuit; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell biology; islet; glucose; oleate; corticosterone; oxygen tension; insulin release; protein profiling; Clark-like electrodes; SELDI-TOF MS; PPI-B; 11β-HSD1; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Pancreatic β-cells sense the concentration of glucose in the systemic circulation through metabolism of the sugar molecule. Failure to correlate the blood sugar concentration to an appropriate metabolic signal disrupts the function of the β-cell as a controller of glucose homeostasis and may contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. 3. 3. The Microvasculature of Endogenous and Transplanted Pancreatic Islets : Blood Perfusion, Oxygenation and Islet Endocrine Function

    Author : Richard Olsson; Per-Ola Carlsson; Leif Jansson; Arne Andersson; Thomas Linn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Cell biology; diabetes mellitus; pancreatic islets; islet transplantation; vascular engraftment; islet microcirculation; oxygenation; blood flow; protein biosynthesis; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes mellitus affects millions of people worldwide. Islet transplantation is a minimal invasive surgical procedure that restores euglycemia and halts the progression of diabetic complications. However, despite transplantation of islets from multiple donors most patients reverse to hyperglycemia within five years. READ MORE

  4. 4. Influence of Islet-derived Factors in Islet Microcirculation and Endocrine Function

    Author : Carl Johan Drott; Per-Ola Carlsson; Leif Jansson; Albert Salehi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetes mellitus; pancreas; blood flow; islet vascularity; islet-derived; TSP-1; ghrelin; CART; irisin; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Diabetes mellitus is a disorder with complex pathology and is frequently associated with vascular complications. In the islet micro milieu locally generated factors may affect both the physiology and the morphology of the tissue. READ MORE

  5. 5. The Impact of Pancreatic Islet Vascular Heterogeneity on Beta Cell Function and Disease

    Author : Sara Ullsten; Per-Ola Carlsson; Joey Lau; Sara Bohman; Rebecca L. Hull; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Pancreatic islets; heterogeneity; islet vascularity; blood flow; islet transplantation; islet amyloid; insulitis; type 1 diabetes; beta cell proliferation; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Diabetes Mellitus is a group of complex and heterogeneous metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglycemia. Even though the condition has been extensively studied, its causes and complex pathologies are still not fully understood. The occurring damage to the pancreatic islets is strikingly heterogeneous.
