  1. 1. GABA in the islets of Langerhans

    Author : Anna Wendt; Diabetes - öcellsexocytos; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; secreting systems; diabetologi; sekretion; Endokrinologi; Endocrinology; SLMV; paracrine regulation; LDCV; islets of Langerhans; autocrine regulation; GABA; diabetology;

    Abstract : GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) is a well-known inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS. GABA is also present at high concentrations in the insulin-producing β-cells in the islets of Langerhans, but its function there is less clear. GABA is believed to accumulate in SLMVs (synaptic-like microvesicles). READ MORE

  2. 2. Pulsatile insulin release from single islets of Langerhans

    Author : Johanna Westerlund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; islets of Langerhans; insulin; ELISA; cytoplasmic calcium; oscillations; type 2 diabetes; glucose; diazoxide; potassium; tolbutamide; DNP; antimycin A; iodoacetamide; microfluorometry; fura-2; KATP channels; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : Insulin release from single islets of Langerhans is pulsatile. The secretory activities of the islets in the pancreas are coordinated resulting in plasma insulin oscillations. Nutrients amplitude-regulate the insulin pulses without influencing their frequency. READ MORE

  3. 3. Experimental Studies on the Vasculature of Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans

    Author : Göran Mattsson; Leif Jansson; Alberto Hayek; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; islets of Langerhans; endothelial cells; islet transplantation; vascular density; diabetes mellitus; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : The blood vessels of the pancreatic islets are of crucial importance for oxygen and metabolite supply as well as dispersal of secreted hormones. In addition to this, endothelial cells have an important role in the revascularization process after islet transplantation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Inflammatory Mediators and Enterovirus Infections in Human Islets of Langerhans

    Author : Annika Moëll; Gun Frisk; Olle Korsgren; Bo Nilsson; Outi Vaarala; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Immunology; diabetes; islets of Langerhans; enterovirus; inflammatory mediators; cytokines; nicotinamide; Immunologi;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is due to a selective loss of the insulin producing β-cells. However, the process responsible for this loss is still unknown. There is accumulating evidence that enteroviruses (EVs) are involved in T1D. In addition to direct virus-induced cytolysis, EVs could facilitate β-cell destruction by inducing inflammatory cytokines. 5. 5. Auxiliary Cells for the Vascularization and Function of Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans

    Author : Liza Grapensparr; Per-Ola Carlsson; Leif Jansson; Mia Phillipson; Aileen King; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Islets of Langerhans; beta cells; diabetes; transplantation; vascularization; Schwann cells; endothelial progenitor cells; neural crest stem cells; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes develops through the progressive destruction of the insulin-producing beta-cells. Regeneration or replacement of beta-cells is therefore needed to restore normal glucose homeostasis. Presently, normoglycemia can be achieved by the transplantation of whole pancreas or isolated islets of Langerhans. READ MORE
