1. Stretched Membranes
Abstract : This thesis deals with relativistic membranes and, in particular, a limit called stretched membranes. The thesis also considers the relation of membranes to the conjectured M-theory and string theory. The thesis is divided into two parts. One introductory part where I introduce areas which are of relevance for the second part. READ MORE

2. Group Extensions, Gerbes and Twisted K-theory
Abstract : This thesis reviews the theory of group extensions, gerbes and twisted K-theory. Application to anomalies in gauge theory is briefly discussed. The main results are presented in two appended scientific papers. READ MORE

3. On the Rank of the Reduced Density Operator for the Laughlin State and Symmetric Polynomials
Abstract : One effective tool to probe a system revealing topological order is to biparti- tion the system in some way and look at the properties of the reduced density operator corresponding to one part of the system. In this thesis we focus on a bipartition scheme known as the particle cut in which the particles in the system are divided into two groups and we look at the rank of the re- duced density operator. 4. A classifying algebra for CFT boundary conditions
Abstract : Conformal field theories (CFT) constitute an interesting class of twodimensionalquantum field theories, with applications in string theoryas well as condensed matter physics. The symmetries of a CFT can beencoded in the mathematical structure of a conformal vertex algebra. READ MORE

5. Hopf and Frobenius algebras in conformal field theory
Abstract : There are several reasons to be interested in conformal field theories in two dimensions. Apart from arising in various physical applications, ranging from statistical mechanics to string theory, conformal field theory is a class of quantum field theories that is interesting on its own. First of all there is a large amount of symmetries. READ MORE
