  1. 1. Mathematical models of biological interactions

    Author : Linnéa Gyllingberg; David J.T. Sumpter; Kolbjörn Tunström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mathematics with specialization in Applied Mathematics; Matematik med inriktning mot tillämpad matematik;

    Abstract : Mathematical models are used to describe and analyse different types of biological interactions.  From self-propelled particle models capturing the collective motion of fish schools to models in mathematical neuroscience describing the interactions between neurons to individual-based models of ecological interactions. 2. 2. Diet and common neurological disorders: cohort studies on dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke

    Author : Erika Olsson; Susanna C. Larsson; Liisa Byberg; Lena Kilander; Emily Sonestedt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : diet; dietary pattern; Healthy Diet Indicator; Mediterranean diet; low carbohydrate; vitamin D; 25-hydroxyvitamin D; Mendelian randomization; milk; fermented milk; epidemiology; cohort study; Alzheimer’s disease; dementia; cognitive impairment; Parkinson’s disease; stroke; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Risk factors for dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke have been widely studied but there are still research gaps concerning the role of diet for the development of these diseases. The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate whether various aspects of diet are associated with common disorders and diseases in the brain. READ MORE

  3. 3. The Human Y chromosome and its role in the developing male nervous system

    Abstract : Recent research demonstrated that besides a role in sex determination and male fertility, the Y chromosome is involved in additional functions including prostate cancer, sex-specific effects on the brain and behaviour, graft-versus-host disease, nociception, aggression and autoimmune diseases. The results presented in this thesis include an analysis of sex-biased genes encoded on the X and Y chromosomes of rodents. READ MORE

  4. 4. On Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia : case control studies, cellular localization and modelling of candidate genes

    Author : Andrea Carmine; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Genetic; association; dopamine; Parkinson s disease; schizophrenia; retinoid; aldehyde; toxicity;

    Abstract : The causes of many major neurodegenerative, neurodevelopmental and psychiatric diseases are unknown. This thesis has aimed at applying knowledge about the dopamine (DA) neuron system and other key systems to clinical material (DNA and post mortem brain tissue) collected from patients with Parkinson s disease (PD), schizophrenia (SZ) and controls, in order to decipher genetic risk factors.
