  1. 1. T cell antigen receptor usage, phenotype and cytokine production in human diseases

    Author : Jan Wahlström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : T cell; T cell receptor; T cell expansion; phenotype; cytokine; extrinsic allergic alveolitis; allergic asthma; multiple myeloma; Wegener s granulomatosis; sarcoidosis;

    Abstract : T lymphocytes are of critical importance for initiating and controlling immune responses, as the T cell receptor (TCR) for antigen allows a highly specific antigen recognition. Determination of TCR usage and characterization of T cell subsets in different diseases helps us understand the underlying immunopathogenic mechanisms, and may also lead to the development of new therapeutic approaches. 2. 2. Nonparametric tests for comparing two treatments by using ordinal data

    Author : Helen Wahlström; Elisabeth Svensson; Jan Lanke; Sture Holm; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Statistik; change; clinical trial; Monte Carlo; ordered categorical data; paired data; permutation test; Pitman efficiency; power; stratification; ties; visual analogue scale; Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney statistic; statistik; Statistics; Statistik; Statistics; Statistik;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns four nonparametric tests for comparing two treatments in a randomized controlled clinical trial when the main response variable generates discrete or continuous ordinal data and measurements are made at baseline and follow-up. In the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test (WMW) the baseline values are not taken into account at all, but in the other three tests both baseline and follow-up values are used. READ MORE

  3. 3. On Fixation of Hip Prostheses

    Author : Lars Palm; Ingemar Ivarsson; Ola Wahlström; Jan Milbrink; Linköpings universitet; []

    Abstract : This thesis, comprising 5 separate studies, is concerned with fixation of prosthetic components in total hip arthroplasty. The results and conclusions of the studies fol-low;The initial stability of femoral revision components, the long cementless PCA stem and the Exeter standard stem cemented in a bed of impacted bone graft, was com-pared in an experimental study. 4. 4. Activation of lung epithelial cells by group 2 mite allergens

    Author : Camilla Österlund; Anders Bucht; Thomas Sandström; Jan Wahlström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; group 2 mite allergens; Der p 2; Der f 2; Eur m 2; Lep d 2; airway epithelium; lungmedicin; Lung Medicine;

    Abstract : Throughout many parts of the world house dust mites (HDM) are considered as a major source of indoor aeroallergens and they are powerful inducers of allergic diseases. Proteolytic HDM allergens are recognised as being able to directly activate respiratory epithelial cells and thereby actively participate in innate immune responses. READ MORE

  5. 5. Technology in education, necessary but not sufficient : understanding learning with virtual patients

    Author : Samuel Edelbring; Nabil Zary; Rolf Wahlström; Timothy Dornan; Sweden Stockholm Karolinska Institutet Management and Ethics Informatics Dept of Learning; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : With the rapid technological development and the broadening access to computers over recent decades, several technological innovations have emerged in medical education, including virtual patients. Students’ use of virtual patients is proposed to fill gaps in clinical exposure, and train clinical reasoning. READ MORE
