  1. 1. Endocrine modulators and sexual differentiation in Japanese quail : With emphasis on the neuroendocrine system

    Author : Krister Halldin; Ted Ebendal; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Biology; Japanese quail; sexual behavior; endocrine disruption; sexual differentiation; estrogen; estrogen receptors; avian; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; Ecotoxicology; ekotoxikologi;

    Abstract : Chemical disruption of the endocrine system in various animal species is currently attracting considerable interest, but avian models are not yet widely used in studying endocrine disturbances. This thesis shows the occurrence of alterations in sexual behavior and reproductive organs in adult Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) following embryonic exposure to estrogen-like chemicals. 2. 2. Roles of ERα and ERβ in Normal and Disrupted Sex Differentiation in Japanese Quail

    Author : Anna Mattsson; Björn Brunström; Krister Halldin; Lena Sahlin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Toxicology; sex differentiation; estrogen receptor; sexual behavior; endocrine disruption; Japanese quail; Toxikologi;

    Abstract : Exposure to xenoestrogens during development has been shown to impair sexual differentiation in various species. The major aim of this thesis was to elucidate the respective roles of the two estrogen receptors ERα and ERβ in normal and disrupted differentiation of sex organs and copulatory behavior in the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). 3. 3. Dissecting Phenotypic Variation in Pigmentation using Forward and Reverse Genetics

    Author : Anders R Hellström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Pigmentation; eumelanin; pheomelanin; knockout; Silver; SLC45A2; PMEL17; Sex-linked barring; CDKN2A; CDKN2B; ARF; chicken; Japanese quail; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Molekylär genetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract : Coat color and patterning phenotypes have been extensively studied as a model for advancing our understanding of the relationship between genetic and phenotypic variation. In this thesis, genes of relevance for pigment cell biology were investigated. The dissertation is divided in two parts. READ MORE

  4. 4. Genomic and Peptidomic Characterization of the Developing Avian Brain

    Author : Birger Scholz; Lennart Dencker; Eric Vilain; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Toxicology; Sex differentation; Sex determination; Sex chromosomes; Dosage Compensation; Genetic; Chickens; Coturnix; Gene Expression Profiling; Neuropeptides; Diencephalon; Toxikologi;

    Abstract : Chicken and Japanese quail are commonly used models in developmental and sex specific neuroendocrine research. There is relatively little known about the mechanisms behind their sex specific brain development, especially regarding the impact of the sex chromosomes (male: ZZ, female ZW) in relation to gonadal hormones. 5. 5. Differentiation of Brain and Reproductive Organs in Birds : Effects of Environmental Contaminants

    Author : Jeanette Axelsson; Björn Brunström; Björn Munro-Jenssen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Zoophysiology; Bird; endocrine disruption; estrogen receptor; methoxychlor; UV-filter; sexual behavior; ovotestis; Zoofysiologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : The first objective of this thesis was to investigate effects of endocrine disruptors on the developing brain and gonads of bird embryos. The substances studied were the insecticide methoxychlor, and nine UV-filters (3-benzylidene camphor (3BC), 4 methyl benzylidene camphor (4MBC), benzophenone (BP) 1,2 and 3, 4 hydroxy benzophenone (4 HB), 4 dihydroxy benzophenone (4DHB), benzyl salicylate (BS), and ethyl-4-aminobenzoate Et-PABA)), commonly used in cosmetic products.
