  1. 1. Hydraulic conductivity relations in soil and fractured rock : fluid component and phase interaction effects

    Author : Jerker Jarsjö; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The hydraulic conductivity of soil and fractured rockdetermines the rate at which fluids and dissolved chemicals flowthrough the subsurface, for given conditions at the boundary.Hence, the estimation of relevant parameters for quantificationof hydraulic conductivity relations constitutes a critical basisfor accurate model predictions. 3. 3. Numerical modeling of groundwater and air flow between compacted bentonite and fractured crystalline rock

    Author : Benoît Dessirier; Jerker Jarsjö; Andrew Frampton; Stefan Finsterle; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Two-phase flow; porous media; fractured media; compacted bentonite; crystalline rock; numerical modeling; geological disposal; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : The geological repository for final storage of spent nuclear fuel, envisioned by the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Management Company (SKB), relies on several barriers: copper canisters deposited in holes in the floor of underground tunnels in deep bedrock, embedded in a buffer of compacted bentonite. The initially unsaturated buffer would take up water from the surrounding rock mass and swell to seal any potential gap. READ MORE

  4. 4. Waterborne pollution from mining in cold climates : Potential catchment-scale immobilization of substances by microbial sulfate reduction (MSR)

    Author : Sandra Fischer; Jerker Jarsjö; Gunhild Rosqvist; Carl-Magnus Mörth; Anna-Kaisa Ronkanen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic; abandoned mines; metal pollution; sulfur isotopes; bacterial sulfate reduction BSR ; nature-based solution NBS ; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : Waterborne pollution from mining is impacting groundwater and surface water resources in many regions of the world. Main problems include acidification and high levels of dissolved toxic metals that adversely affect humans and ecosystems. READ MORE

  5. 5. Sediment transport from source to sink in the Lake Baikal basin : Impacts of hydroclimatic change and mining

    Author : Jan Pietroń; Jerker Jarsjö; Enrica Viparelli; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sediment transport; human impact; hydroclimatic change; surface mining; metal-enriched sediment; Lake Baikal; the Selenga River; the Selenga Delta; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : Different magnitude, intensity and timing of precipitation can impact runoff, hillslope erosion and transport of sediment along river channels.  Human activities, such as dam construction and surface mining can also considerably influence transport of sediment and sediment-bound contaminants.
