  1. 1. Insulin Resistance and Inflammation as Risk Factors for Congestive Heart Failure

    Author : Erik Ingelsson; Lars Lind; Johan Ärnlöv; Johan Sundström; Jan Östergren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Geriatric nursing; congestive heart failure; insulin resistance; inflammation; obesity; blood sedimentation; apolipoproteins; antioxidants; beta carotene; oxidative stress; registries; epidemiology; risk factors; Äldrevård; Older people and ageing; Äldre och åldrande;

    Abstract : Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality and the identification of modifiable risk factors is crucial in order to diminish suffering of this common disease. The primary aim of this thesis was to investigate novel metabolic risk factors for CHF, with a focus on insulin resistance and inflammation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Left ventricular hypertrophy and the insulin resistance syndrome

    Author : Johan Sundström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Left ventricular hypertrophy; insulin; glucose; lipids; mortality; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Geriatrics; geriatrik;

    Abstract : Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and the insulin resistance syndrome are common conditions associated with a markedly increased cardiovascular risk. In a fairly large prospective longitudinal study of men from the general population, we found that an unfavorable serum fatty acid profile and components of the insulin resistance syndrome such as dyslipidemia, obesity and hypertension at age 50 predicted the prevalence of LVH at age 70. 4. 4. Radiosynthesis of Perfluoroalkyl Substances : Chemical analysis, uptake, distribution, and partitioning studies

    Author : Maria Sundström; Åke Bergman; John Butenhoff; Stefan Nobel; Johan Eriksson; Christopher Lau; Stockholms universitet; []

    Abstract : Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are widely utilized manmade chemicals. Their properties have made them highly appreciated in a variety of industrial and consumer product applications, including fire-fighting foams, hydraulic fluids, as well as in cookware and food contact papers. 5. 5. Theory and Applications of Coupling Based Intensity Modulated Fibre-Optic Sensors

    Author : Johan Jason; Hans-Erik Nilsson; Bertil Arvidsson; Bernt Sundström; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; fibre-optics; sensor; intensity modulation; coupling; Electrical engineering; electronics and photonics; Elektroteknik; elektronik och fotonik;

    Abstract : Optical fibre sensors can be used to measure a wide variety of properties. In some cases they have replaced conventional electronic sensors due to their possibility of performing measurements in environments suffering from electromagnetic disturbance, or in harsh environments where electronics cannot survive.
