  1. 11. Complement Activation Triggered by Biomaterial Surfaces : Mechanisms and Regulation

    Author : Jonas Andersson; Bo Nilsson; Hans Elwing; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immunology; Biomaterials; Biocompatibility; Blood; Complement; Immunologi; Immunology; Immunologi; klinisk immunologi; Clinical Immunology;

    Abstract : Today there are a vast number of medical devices in temporary or permanent contact with human tissues. Blood-biomaterial contact is known to trigger the complement system and results in generation of fluid phase anaphylatoxins C3a and C5a, and surface-bound C3b and iC3b. READ MORE

  2. 12. Indirect effects of unemployment and low earnings : Crime and children's school performance

    Author : Anna Nilsson; Jonas Agell; Rudolf Winter-Ebmer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Economics; Nationalekonomi;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of three self-contained essays that consider indirect effects of unemployment and low earnings on crime and children’s school performance. The first essay, Crime, unemployment and labor market programs in turbulent times (joint with Jonas Agell), investigates the effect of unemployment and participation in labor market programs, in general and among youth, on Swedish crime rates using a new panel data set for Swedish municipalities for the period 1996-2000. 4. 14. DNA Tools and Microfluidic Systems for Molecular Analysis

    Author : Jonas Jarvius; Ulf Landegren; Mats Nilsson; P Luke Lee; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Molecular medicine; Proximity ligation; Microfluidics; Single molecule detection; Microarray; Bonding; Molekylärmedicin;

    Abstract : Improved methods are needed to interrogate the genome and the proteome. Methods with high selectivity, wide dynamic range, and excellent precision, capable of simultaneously analyzing many biomolecules are required to decipher cellular function. This thesis describes a molecular and microfluidic toolbox designed with those criteria in mind. READ MORE

  5. 15. On the resource efficiency of kraft lignin extraction

    Author : Jonas Kihlman; Lars Nilsson; Christer Gustavsson; Per Kristensson; Esa Vakkilainen; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : Lignin is regarded as a promising raw material for the production of biobased products, such as chemicals, materials and fuels, and will most probably be a key component in future lignocellulosic biorefineries.This thesis examines the lignin extraction process in a kraft pulp mill, the technologies that are available for this purpose, and the impact made on the mill.
