  1. 6. Organic carbon dynamics in the Baltic Sea : A modelling perspective

    Author : Filippa Fransner; Jonas Nycander; Christoph Humborg; Andreas Oschlies; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; carbon cycle; organic carbon; primary production; remineralisation; terrestrial DOC; extracellular DOC; flexible stoichiometry; Redfield ratio; air-sea CO2 exchange; pCO2; coupled 3D physical-biogeochemical modelling; Gulf of Bothnia; Baltic Sea; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : Coastal seas constitute a link between land and the open ocean, and therefore play an important role in the global carbon cycle. Large amounts of carbon, of both terrestrial and marine origin, transit and are transformed in these waters, which belong to the more productive areas of the oceans. READ MORE

  2. 7. Spiritum sidus : The star of our life – On internal tides in the ocean

    Author : Gaspard Geoffroy; Jonas Nycander; Christian Stranne; Aurélien Ponte; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Internal waves; Tides; Argo floats; Time series analysis; Flow-topography interaction; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi;

    Abstract : Tidal currents flowing over rough bathymetry generate internal tides. These internal waves with tidal frequency can be decomposed into vertical modes. Low modes generally travel thousands of kilometers, until they break due to shear flow instabilities, while high modes are believed to break close to the generation site. READ MORE

  3. 8. The Location and Variability of Southern ocean Fronts

    Author : Robert M. Graham; Agatha M. de Boer; Jonas Nycander; Qiong Zhang; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The location of fronts has a direct influence on both the physical and biological processes in the Southern Ocean. Moreover, the Subtropical Front (STF) is believed play a key role in the global climate system. READ MORE

  4. 9. The global marine carbon system through time

    Author : Jenny Hieronymus; Jonas Nycander; Gösta Walin; Michael Follows; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : Carbon dioxide is an important greenhouse gas and in order to understand its effect on the climate we need to identify its sources and sinks. This thesis focuses on different aspects of the marine carbon system and the exchange of carbon between the ocean and the atmosphere. READ MORE

  5. 10. An investigation into ocean thermodynamics and water-mass transformation

    Author : Magnus Hieronymus; Nycander Jonas; Stephen Griffies; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ocean thermodynamics; water-mass transformation; buoyancy; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : This thesis presents oceanic budgets of potential temperature, salinity and buoyancy as well as a novel way of diagnosing water-mass transformation in salinity-temperature space. The buoyancy of seawater is given by a nonlinear function of temperature, salinity and pressure and much of the work in this thesis revolves around how fluxes of heat and salinity influence the buoyancy of seawater through these nonlinearities.
