  1. 21. Risk Management in Tunneling Projects : Estimation and Planning

    Author : Mohammad Mohammadi; Johan Spross; Fredrik Johansson; Stefan Larsson; Anna Kadefors; Amund Bruland; KTH; []
    Keywords : Cost overrun; Transport infrastructure projects; Time and cost estimation; Probabilistic approaches; Tunneling; Soil and Rock Mechanics; Jord- och bergmekanik;

    Abstract : Cost overruns and schedule delays are frequently observed occurrences in the construction of transport infrastructure projects. Such phenomena lead to the mismanagement of significant amounts of both public and private resources. READ MORE

  2. 22. Ground vibrations due to pile and sheet pile driving : influencing factors, predictions and measurements

    Author : Fanny Deckner; Staffan Hintze; Kenneth Viking; Sigurdur Erlingsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ground vibration; pile; sheet pile; prediction; markvibrationer; påle; spont; prediktion;

    Abstract : Ground vibrations due to pile driving are part of a complex process. Vibration is generated from the pile driver to the pile. As the pile interacts with the surrounding soil, vibrations are transferred at the pile-soil interface. The vibration propagates through the ground and interacts with structures, both above ground and underground. READ MORE

  3. 23. Ground Improvement by Dry Deep Mixing Lime-Cement Column Panels as Excavation Support

    Author : Razvan Ignat; Stefan Larsson; Sadek Baker; Sven Liedberg; Masaki Kitazume; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Many urban areas near the coastal regions of Sweden are characterized by post-glacial clay deposits with very low undrained shear strength and high compressibility. Column type ground improvement by the Deep Mixing, DM, method using a binder mixture of lime and cement is commonly used in areas with poor soil conditions due to its cost-effectiveness, predominantly for settlement reduction and to improve the stability of embankments. 4. 24. Managing uncertainties in geotechnical parameters : From the perspective of Eurocode 7

    Author : Anders Prästings; Stefan Larsson; Johan Spross; Rasmus Müller; Kok-Kwang Phoon; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Eurocode 7; Characteristic value; Partial-factor method; Reliability-based design; Byggvetenskap; Civil and Architectural Engineering;

    Abstract : Geotechnical engineering is strongly associated with large uncertainties. Geotechnical site investigations are made only at discrete points and most of a soil volume is never tested. A major issue is therefore how to cost effectively reduce geotechnical uncertainties with respect to structural performance. READ MORE

  5. 25. Model uncertainty of design tools to analyze block stability

    Author : Mehdi Bagheri; Håkan Stille; Mats Holmberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Block failure is one of the most common failure modes in tunnels. Design tools have some simplifications and, therefore, they also have some model uncertainties. The purpose of this licentiate thesis is to assess the model uncertainty for different design tools in order to estimate block stability. READ MORE
