  1. 1. Methological advances in the examination of the dopamine system in brain

    Author : Judit Sóvágó; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Dopamine-D2 D3 receptors; brain; [35S]GTPgS binding autoradiography; positron emission tomography; partial volume effect;

    Abstract : The dopamine (DA) system in brain has attracted considerable attention in neuroscience due to its involvement in fundamental brain functions and its postulated role in the pathophysiology of several neuropsychiatric disorders. Radioligand binding techniques in vitro and in vivo, such as receptor binding autoradiography and positron emission tomography (PET) have substantially contributed to our understanding of the DA system. 2. 2. Studies of cellular pathogenesis in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis

    Author : Judit Wefer; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : EAE; MS; autoimmunity; DNA vaccine; antigen-specific therapies;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I have studied antigen-specific therapeutic interventions of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and aimed to understand the respective roles of different cell subsets in initiation and perpetuation of disease. EAE is a commonly used animal model for the human disease Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a demyelinating disease mainly affecting young adults. READ MORE

  3. 3. High-redshift active galactic nuclei and their environment

    Author : Judit Fogasy; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; galaxies: evolution -- galaxies: high-redshift -- galaxies: active -- galaxies: Starburst -- -- Submillimeter: galaxies;

    Abstract : In order to understand the formation and evolution of local massive galaxies and to reveal the processes that engineered the tight correlations found between their supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass and bulge mass or velocity dispersion, the study of powerful, high-redshift active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and their environment is crucial. AGNs are luminous targets providing important clues to galaxy evolution, as their central SMBH is growing at high rates, which opens the opportunity to unfold how the growth of the black hole influences the growth of its host galaxy. 4. 4. The environment of high-redshift AGN

    Author : Judit Fogasy; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In order to understand the formation and evolution of local massive galaxies and to reveal the processes that engineered the tight correlations found between their supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass and bulge mass or velocity dispersion, the study of powerful, high-redshift active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their environment is crucial. Observations of high-z quasars and radio galaxies suggest that these AGN live in overdense environment surrounding by star-forming Ly&alpha-emitters and submillimeter galaxies. READ MORE

  5. 5. Nanostructures Studied by Atomic Force Microscopy : Ion Tracks and Nanotextured Films

    Author : Judit Kopniczky; Claes-Göran Granqvist; Lars Montelius; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; ion impact; surface tracks; electronic sputtering; WO3; nanoparticle; scanning probe microscopy; tapping mode; Fysik; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : The work presented in this thesis concernes two sorts of nanostructures: energetic-ion-impact-induced surface tracks and gas-deposited WO3 nanoparticles. Our aims to characterise these nanostuctures and understand the physical principles behind their formation are of general interests for basic science as well as of the field of nanotechnology.
