1. Effects of high intensity focused ultrasound on the intervertebral disc
Abstract : The purpose of this study was to study and try to optimise high intensity focused ultrasound treatment of the intervertebral disc. We demonstrated that it was possible to heat intervertebral discs with HIFU delivered by 50 or 5 mm diameter ultrasound transducers. READ MORE

2. Palladium(II)-Catalyzed Oxidative Cyclization Strategies : Selective Formation of New C-C and C-N Bonds
Abstract : The main focus of this thesis has been directed towards preparation and oxidative carbocyclization of en-, dien- and aza-enallenes.In the first part of this thesis, a stereoselective oxidative carbocyclization of dienallenes was realized. READ MORE

3. The Role of Mitochondrial Uncoupling in the Development of Diabetic Nephropathy
Abstract : Diabetes is closely associated with increased oxidative stress, especially originating from the mitochondria. A mechanism to reduce increased mitochondria superoxide production is to reduce the mitochondria membrane potential by releasing protons across the mitochondria membrane. READ MORE

4. Synthesis and characterization of magnetic nanolaminated carbides
Abstract : MAX phases are a group of nanolaminated ternary carbides and nitrides, with a composition expressed by the general formula Mn+1AXn (? = 1 − 3), where M is a transition metal, A is an A-group element, and X is carbon and/or nitrogen. MAX phases have attracted interest due to their unique combination of metallic and ceramic properties, related to their inherently laminated structure of a transition metal carbide (Mn+1Xn) layer interleaved by an A-group metal layer. 5. Optical Studies of Single Quantum Dots
Abstract : This thesis presents spectroscopic studies of single self-assembled InP quantum dots (QDs). The electronic properties of these QDs have been studied by photoluminescence (PL) and scanning tunnelling luminescence (STL). The QDs were grown in the Stranski-Krastanow mode and were embedded in GaInP. READ MORE
