  1. 1. The Scents of Nature : Identification and Synthesis of Bioactive Compounds Used in Insect Communication

    Author : Erika Wallin; Erik Hedenström; Anna-Karin Borg-Karlson; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Semiochemicals; Sex pheromone; Bicyclus spp; Euglossa spp; Cimex hemipterus; Cimex lectularius; Kladothrips nicolsoni; Kladothrips rugosus; Drosophila melanogaster;

    Abstract : Pest insects cause great financial losses in the forest and food industry every year. To fight these pests industries have used insecticides, which are sometimes harmful to nature and humans. READ MORE

  2. 2. Stable iterated function systems

    Author : Erland Gadde; Hans Wallin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hausdorff metric; iterated function system IFS ; attractor; invariant set; address; Hutchinson’s metric; we a k* -topology; IFS with probabilities; invariant measure; the Random Iteration Algorithm;

    Abstract : The purpose of this thesis is to generalize the growing theory of iterated function systems (IFSs). Earlier, hyperbolic IFSs with finitely many functions have been studied extensively. Also, hyperbolic IFSs with infinitely many functions have been studied. In this thesis, more general IFSs are studied. READ MORE

  3. 3. Gas Exchange over Aquatic Interfaces and its Importance for Greenhouse Gas Emission

    Author : Jovana Kokic; Sebastian Sobek; Erik Sahlée; Marcus B. Wallin; Anne Ojala; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; gas exchange; lake; stream; lake sediment; headwaters; carbon dioxide; methane; greenhouse gas emission; carbon; turbulence; Biology with specialization in Limnology; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi;

    Abstract : Aquatic ecosystems play a substantial role in global cycling of carbon (C), despite covering only about 4% of the earth surface. They emit large amounts of greenhouse gases (GHG) to the atmosphere, comparable to the amount of C stored annually in terrestrial ecosystems. In addition, C can be buried in lake sediments. 4. 4. Numerical and modelling aspects of large-eddy and hybrid simulations of turbulent flows

    Author : Matteo Montecchia; Arne V. Johansson; Gert Brethouwer; Stefan Wallin; Dominic Von Terzi; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; turbulence; wall-bounded flows; large-eddy simulation; SGS modelling; OpenFOAM; hybrid RANS-LES; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : In this study, the explicit algebraic sub-grid scale (SGS) model (EAM) has been extensively validated in wall-resolved large-eddy simulations (LES) of wall-bounded turbulent flows at different Reynolds numbers and a wide range of resolutions. Compared to eddy-viscosity based models, the formulation of the EAM is more consistent with the physics and allows to accurately capture SGS anisotropy,which is relevant especially close to walls.
