  1. 1. Type l diabetes in childhood and adolescence, environmental exposures and gut microbiota

    Author : Mona-Lisa Wernroth; Tove Fall; Bodil Svennblad; Katja Fall; Catarina Almqvist; Mikael Knip; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Type 1 diabetes; gut microbiota; antibiotics; stress; dogs; mode of delivery; Epidemiologi; Epidemiology;

    Abstract : Environmental factors leading to disturbances in the gut microbiota might play an important role as triggers for, and/or contributing factors in, the development of type 1 diabetes (T1D). The overall aim of the research underlying this thesis was to study the influence of environmental factor exposure on the risk of T1D in childhood and adolescence, and gut microbiota composition in early childhood. 2. 2. Medical interventions and gastric cancer risk : an observational approach

    Author : Katja Fall; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Gastric cancer; cardia cancer; histological subtypes; H. pylori; antibiotic treatment; eradication; aspirin; NSAIDs; cholecystectomy; reactive gastritis; cohort; epidemiology;

    Abstract : Helicobacter pylori infection is undoubtedly the most important risk factor for gastric cancer. A causal relationship with gastric cancer, however, has not been clearly established and the carcinogenic mechanism is still ambiguous. READ MORE

  3. 3. Life-course influences on occurrence and outcome for stroke and coronary heart disease

    Author : Cecilia Bergh; Scott Montgomery; Katja Fall; Ylva Nilsagård; Peter Appelros; Meena Kumari; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cardiovascular disease; stroke; risk factors; adolescence; stress resilience; adult infections; life-course epidemiology; cohort study;

    Abstract : Although typical clinical onset does not occur until adulthood, cardiovascular disease (CVD) may have a long natural history with accumulation of risks beginning in early life and continuing through childhood and into adolescence and adulthood. Therefore, it is important to adopt a life-course approach to explore accumulation of risks, as well as identifying age-defined windows of susceptibility, from early life to disease onset. READ MORE

  5. 5. Childhood bereavement, stress resilience, and cancer risk : an integrated register-based approach

    Author : Beatrice Kennedy; Katja Fall; Fang Fang; Unnur Valdimarsdottír; Scott Montgomery; Meena Kumari; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; alcohol; bereavement; cancer; drug use; epidemiology; health behaviour; psychological resilience; smoking; stress;

    Abstract : Accumulating evidence suggests that psychosocial stress and susceptibility to stressful exposures – stress resilience – influence the risk of various health outcomes, but the potential link with cancer occurrence is unclear. The aims of this thesis were to test if loss of a close relative, a marker of severe psychological stress, and stress resilience measured during late adolescence are associated with cancer risk later in life, as well as to explore potential underlying mechanisms.
