  1. 21. The role of fibroblast growth factor-23 in chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder

    Author : Majd A. I. Mirza; Tobias Larsson; Tilman Drüeke; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; FGF23; FGF-23; CKD; CKD-MBD; cardiovascular disease; vascular function; atherosclerosis; hypertrophy; LVMI; LVH; fractures; bone; fat mass; obesity; apolipoproteins; cholesterol; lipids; Kidney diseases; Njursjukdomar; Cardiovascular medicine; Kardiovaskulär medicin; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) was initially identified as the causative factor of autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets. Further studies confirmed that FGF23 is predominantly expressed in the osteocytes and osteoblasts of bone and that circulating FGF23 acts on the kidney to inhibit renal phosphate reabsorption and 1,25(OH)2D3 hydroxylation. 2. 22. Growth hormones in chronic kidney disease

    Author : Erik Nilsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Several hormonal systems are disrupted in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and disturbances of the growth hormone axis could contribute to increased morbidity and mortality through effects on cardiovascular health, energy metabolism and inflammation. The overall aim of this thesis was to increase knowledge about hormonal alterations and their consequences in CKD, focusing on cardiovascular disease (CVD), mortality and the growth hormone axis in end-stage renal disease. 3. 23. Prospective and longitudinal human studies of lead and cadmium exposure and the kidney

    Author : Johan Nilsson Sommar; Ingvar A Bergdahl; Max Petzold; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cadmium; end-stage renal disease; kidney; lead; longitudinal; matched case-control; mixed effects; prospective; Occupational and Environmental Medicine; arbets- och miljömedicin;

    Abstract : Cadmium and lead accumulate in humans and can have toxic effects. Exposure to cadmium is well known to cause kidney damage. Cadmium binds to metallothioneins, proteins that play a role in cadmium transport. READ MORE

  4. 24. Cellular and molecular mechanisms of kidney injury and regeneration

    Author : Michelle Kha; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; kidney; injury; regeneration; repair; scattered tubular cells; proximal tubular cells; podocytes; SOX9; HNF4A;

    Abstract : The prevalence of kidney disease is constantly increasing with about 600 million people afflicted globally. Kidney disease may result in end stage renal disease, a condition that requires renal replacement therapy in the form of kidney transplantation or dialysis. READ MORE

  5. 25. Prognosis and progression in chronic kidney disease

    Author : Marie Evans; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Analgesics; Chronic Kidney Disease; Epidemiology; Dialysis; Glomerular Filtration Rate; Lead Metal Exposure; Survival;

    Abstract : Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a life threatening condition with high risk of pre-term death and need for dialysis. The population prevalence of CKD has been estimated to 10-13% for both Europe and the USA. READ MORE
