  1. 1. Cisplatin-resistance and cell death in malignant pleural mesothelioma cells

    Author : Veronica Janson; Kjell Grankvist; Roger Henriksson; Parviz Behnam-Motlagh; Anders Johansson; Boris Zhivotovsky; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; apoptosis; BH3-only proteins; caspase; cell morphology; potassium transport; protein kinase B PKB Akt ; signalling pathways; time; Clinical chemistry; Klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive, treatment-resistant tumour. Cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (II)) is the best single-agent chemotherapy for MPM, but platinum-based combination therapies give the best overall response rates. However, cisplatin use is limited by resistance and severe side effects. READ MORE

  2. 2. Tumour Biological Factors Characterizing Metastasizing Serotonin-producing Ileocaecal Carcinoids

    Author : Janet Lynn Cunningham; Eva Tiensuu Janson; Kjell Öberg; Irvin M. Modlin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Internal medicine; endocrine tumour; midgut carcinoid; serotonin-producing neuroendocrine carcinoma; prognosis; morphology; tachykinin; connective tissue growth factor; islet autoantigen-2; morphology; carcinoid syndrome; Invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : In this study, metastasizing serotonin-producing ileocaecal carcinoid tumours (MSPCs) were examined for biological characteristics that could be used to define clinically relevant subgroups within this patient population. Possible targets for new treatment options were also explored. READ MORE

  3. 3. Early detection of major surgical postoperative complications evaluated by microdialysis

    Author : Tal Hörer; Kjell Janson; Lars Norgren; Bengt Jeppsson; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; aortic occlusion balloon; anastomotic leakage; glycerol; intraabdominal hypertension; intraperitoneal microdialysis; intestinal ischemia; intraabdominal metabolism; lactate pyruvate ratio; postoperative complications; ruptured abdominal aortic anerusym; Kirurgi; Surgery;

    Abstract : Major abdominal surgery may be followed by postoperative complications, especially in the elderly and patients with co morbidities as diabetes mellitus and obesity. Some of the most feared complications as anastomotic leakage, abdominal infections, abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) and intestinal ischemia can lead to sepsis, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) with high morbidity and mortality. 4. 4. Nitric Oxide Exchange in Central and Peripheral Airways : Determinants in Health and Respiratory Disease

    Author : Andrei Malinovschi; Christer Janson; Kjell Alving; Lena Holm; Elisabeth Bel; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : exhaled nitric oxide; alveolar NO; bronchial NO flux; extended NO analysis; asthma; smoking; snus; IgE-sensitization; pharyngo-oral tract; nitrate; nitrite; pulmonary hypertension;

    Abstract : Background: Exhaled nitric oxide (NO) is a marker of eosinophilic steroid-sensitive inflammation in the airways of patients with respiratory disease. Moreover, information about the localization of inflammation in the respiratory tree is obtained by estimates of bronchial and alveolar contributions to exhaled NO. READ MORE

  5. 5. A Longitudinal Study of Asthma : Risk Factors and Prognosis

    Author : Monica Uddenfeldt; Anna Rask-Andersen; Christer Janson; Dan Norbäck; Kjell Larsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : asthma epidemiology; longitudinal studies; obstructive airway symptoms; risk factors; BMI; diet; smoking; allergic sensitization; atopy; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to identify risk factors for the onset of adult asthma. Other objectives were to study determinants of smoking habits and the association between sensitization and outcome of asthma. In 1990, a questionnaire was distributed to 12,732 individuals from three age groups (16, 30-39 and 60-69 years) in two counties of Sweden. READ MORE
