  2. 2. Studies of the electronic noise of the Tile Calorimeter and the development of a material map for searches for exotic long-lived particles which decay

    Author : Filip Backman; David Milstead; Christian Ohm; Klas Hultqvist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : This thesis contains two major topics related to the ATLAS experiment: the calibration of electronic noise in the tile calorimeter and the development of a detailed map of the material in the inner tracker used in searches for long-lived particles.The noise in TileCal is shown to be consistent with the expectations based on heat and radiation. 3. 3. Exploring particle physics beyond the Standard Model

    Author : Sebastian Baum; Katherine Freese; Klas Hultqvist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; teoretisk fysik; Theoretical Physics;

    Abstract : The standard model of particle physics (SM) is arguably the best tested theory of physics, providing an accurate description of virtually all high energy particle physics phenomena observable in the laboratory. However, the SM also has a number of shortcomings: some of more theoretical nature such as the fine-tuning problem of the Higgs or the strong-CP problem, and some of more phenomenological nature such as not allowing for a satisfying implementation of neutrino masses and the lack of a suitable candidate for the observed dark matter of the Universe. 4. 4. Searches for Dark Matter with IceCube and DeepCore : New constraints on theories predicting dark matter particles

    Author : Matthias Danninger; Klas Hultqvist; Patrick Decowski; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Dark matter; neutrinos; neutrino telescopes; IceCube; DeepCore; dark matter experiments; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : The cubic-kilometer sized IceCube neutrino observatory, constructed in the glacial ice at the South Pole, searches indirectly for dark matter via neutrinos from dark matter self-annihilations. It has a high discovery potential through striking signatures. READ MORE

  5. 5. Search for Neutrinos from Gamma-ray Bursts using the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

    Author : Kunal Avinash Deoskar; Chad Finley; Klas Hultqvist; Paschal Coyle; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Gamma-ray bursts; neutrinos; IceCube Neutrino Observatory; Physics; fysik;

    Abstract : Gamma ray bursts (GRBs) are short bursts of high energy γ-radiation and are among some of the most energetic phenomena in the universe. GRBs have three distinct emission phases: the prompt phase with high-energy γ-rays, the precursor phase which is the time interval before the prompt phase and is reported to have an additional smaller burst for some GRBs, and the afterglow phase which is the time interval after the prompt phase with observations for electromagnetic radiation across a large wavelength range reported for many GRBs.
