  1. 6. Structure, Bonding and Chemistry of Water and Hydroxyl on Transition Metal Surfaces

    Author : Klas Andersson; Anders Nilsson; Falko Netzer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; core-level spectroscopy; surface chemistry; water; hydroxyl; metal surfaces; adsorption; structure; hydrogen bonding; Chemical physics; Kemisk fysik;

    Abstract : The structure, bonding and chemistry of water and hydroxyl on metal surfaces are presented. Synchrotron based x-ray photoelectron- and x-ray absorption spectroscopy along with density functional theory calculations mainly form the basis of the results. READ MORE

  2. 7. Permanent stoma after anterior resection for rectal cancer : prevalence and mechanisms

    Author : Klas Holmgren; Martin Rutegård; Jörgen Rutegård; Markku M. Haapamäki; Peter Matthiessen; Malin Sund; Per J. Nilsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; rectal cancer; anterior resection; permanent stoma; defunctioning stoma; mesorectal excision; biomarkers; Surgery; kirurgi;

    Abstract : While sphincter-saving surgery constitutes standard treatment for rectal cancer, anterior resection still harbours a significant risk of a permanent stoma in the long run. Although anastomotic leakage plays a major role in this surgical dilemma, the exact mechanisms are not known, while surveys indicate a stoma-free outcome is essential for a majority of patients. 3. 8. The cell cycle regulators p18Ink4c and p19Ink4d : in vivo studies of their roles in tumorigenesis and development

    Author : Lisa Nilsson; Olle Heby; Martine Roussel; Klas Wiman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Progression through the G1, S, G2 and M phases of the cell cycle is controlled by cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks) and cyclins. These proteins form active Cdk:cyclin complexes that phosphorylate specific substrates. READ MORE

  4. 9. Microactuators for Powerful Pumps

    Author : Roger Bodén; Klas Hjort; Jan-Åke Schweitz; Johan Nilsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; µTAS; chromatography; high pressure; lab-on-a-chip; microactuator; microdispenser; micropump; on-chip; paraffin; PCM; point-of-care; Engineering physics; Teknisk fysik;

    Abstract : When paraffin wax melts it exhibits a large, relatively incompressible volume expansion. This can be used in microactuators for strong and large displacements, a rare combination among actuators. Furthermore, paraffin is inexpensive, inert and environmentally friendly, as well as easily processed and actuated. READ MORE

  5. 10. Bacterial viruses targeting multi-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli

    Author : Harald Eriksson; Anders Nilsson; Elisabeth Haggård-Ljungquist; Klas Flärdh; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bacterial viruses; Bacteriophage; Phage; Phage therapy; multi-resistant bacteria; Klebsiella pneumoniae; molekylärgenetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract : The global increase in antibiotic resistance levels in bacteria is a growing concern to our society and highlights the need for alternative strategies to combat bacterial infections. Bacterial viruses (phages) are the natural predators of bacteria and are as diverse as their hosts, but our understanding of them is limited. READ MORE
