  1. 1. Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae : Treatment, Selection and International Spread

    Author : Thomas Tängdén; Otto Cars; Anders Johansson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Escherichia coli; Klebsiella pneumoniae; extended-spectrum beta-lactamases; carbapenemases; metallo-beta-lactamases; synergy; antibiotic interventions;

    Abstract : The prevalence of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and carbapenemases is increasing worldwide. Therapeutic options for infections with these bacteria are limited not only by the production of ESBLs and carbapenemases, which confer resistance to cephalosporins and carbapenems, but also by frequent co-resistance to other antibiotics. 2. 2. Bacterial viruses targeting multi-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli

    Author : Harald Eriksson; Anders Nilsson; Elisabeth Haggård-Ljungquist; Klas Flärdh; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bacterial viruses; Bacteriophage; Phage; Phage therapy; multi-resistant bacteria; Klebsiella pneumoniae; molekylärgenetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract : The global increase in antibiotic resistance levels in bacteria is a growing concern to our society and highlights the need for alternative strategies to combat bacterial infections. Bacterial viruses (phages) are the natural predators of bacteria and are as diverse as their hosts, but our understanding of them is limited. READ MORE

  3. 3. Antibiotic resistance gone wild : A One Health perspective on carriage, selection and transmission of Extended-Spectrum Cephalosporinase- and Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae

    Author : Clara Atterby; Josef D. Järhult; Nicola Williams; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antibiotic resistance; E. coli; K. pneumoniae; ESBL; AmpC; Carbapenemase; ciprofloxacin resistance; colistin resistance; rural; wildlife; birds; sub-MIC; MSC; Cambodia; environment; epidemiology; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases;

    Abstract : Antibiotics have saved millions of lives since they came into clinical use during the Second World War in the 1940s. Today, our effective use of antibiotics is under great threat due to emerging antibiotic resistance in bacteria. This thesis addresses the problems of antibiotic resistance from a ”One Health” perspective. READ MORE

  4. 4. Enterobacteriaceae Producing Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases : Aspects of Detection, Epidemiology and Control

    Author : Birgitta Lytsy; Åsa Melhus; Dan Andersson; Håkan Hanberger; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase; ESBL; pulse-field gel elctrophoresis; typing methods; infection control; typningsmetoder; vårdhygien; Bacteriology; Bakteriologi; Clinical Bacteriology; Klinisk bakteriologi;

    Abstract : Enterobacteriaceae belong to the normal enteric flora in humans and may cause infections. Escherichia coli is the leading urinary tract pathogen with septicaemic potential, whereas Klebsiella pneumoniae causes opportunistic infections and often outbreaks in hospital settings. 5. 5. Antibiotic uptake in Gram-negative bacteria

    Author : Claudio Muheim; Daniel Daley; Jean-Marie Pagès; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Gram-negative bacteria; Antibiotic uptake; Outer membrane; Lipopolysaccharide; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : The increasing emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a serious threat to public health. Of particular concern are Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae or Pseudomonas aeruginosa. READ MORE
