  1. 6. Some Characteristics of Human Prostasomes and Their Relationship to Prostate Cancer

    Author : Göran Ronquist; Anders Larsson; Lena Carlsson; Alicia Llorente; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostasomes; prostate; prostate cancer; clusterin; antibodies; metastasis; exosomes; PC-3 cells; DNA vehicles; gene therapy; immunoblotting; mass spectrometry; agarose gel electrophoresis; vertebral metastasis.; Clinical chemistry; Klinisk kemi; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : Background: The secretory epithelial cells of the prostate gland use sophisticated vehicles named prostasomes to relay important information to sperm cells in semen. This prostasome-forming and secretory ability of the epithelial cells is also preserved in poorly differentiated prostate cancer cells. READ MORE

  2. 7. Misfolded superoxide dismutase-1 in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

    Author : Per Zetterström; Stefan L Marklund; Lawrence J. Hayward; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ALS; SOD1; protein misfolding; SOD1 conformation; disulfide-reduced; transgenic mice; cerebrospinal fluid; protein-protein interaction; antibodies; Clinical chemistry; Klinisk kemi; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a disease in which the motor neurons die in a progressive manner, leading to paralysis and muscle wasting. ALS is always fatal, usually through respiratory failure when the disease reaches muscles needed for breathing. Most cases are sporadic, but approximately 5–10% are familial. READ MORE

  3. 8. Homocysteine and its determinants in relation to cardiovascular risk factors and myocardial infarction

    Author : Elisabet Söderström; Johan Hultdin; Torbjörn K. Nilsson; Anders Larsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Homocysteine; folate; myocardial infarction; apolipoprotein; risk factors; cotinine; nicotine; tobacco; CTH; MTHFR; renal insufficiency; glomerular filtration rate; creatinine; cystatin C; shrunken pore syndrome; epidemiology; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : Background: Globally, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke, are the leading cause of illness and death and constitute a significant part of the disease burden in Sweden and Western Europe. Age, hypertension, smoking, obesity, dyslipoproteinemia, diabetes, and impaired renal function are considered established risk factors for CVD. READ MORE

  4. 9. Controlled release gel formulations and preclinical screening of drug candidates

    Author : Tofeeq Ur-Rehman; Gerhard Gröbner; Mikael Elofsson; Åsa Gylfe; Martin Malmsten; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; poloxamer; drug delivery; micellization; DMSO; calorimetry; NMR. in situ gelation; chitosan; preclinical pharmacokinetics; type III secretion inhibitors; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; Pharmaceutics; galenisk farmaci;

    Abstract : Simple gel formulations may be applied to enhance the systemic and local exposure of potential compounds. The aim of this thesis is the development and characterization of controlled release formulations based on thermo-reversible poloxamer gels, which are suitable for novel drug delivery applications. 5. 10. Avian antibodies applied in particle enhanced turbidimetric immunoassay : Developement of serum/plasma calprotectin immunoassay and its clinical performance as a marker for bacterial infections

    Author : Tom Nilsen; Anders Larsson; Bjørn Steen Skålhegg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sepsis; avian antibodies; calprotectin antigen; particle enhanced turbidimetric immunoassay.; Clinical Chemistry; Klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : Calprotectin is a cytosolic protein in the granulocytes, consisting of S100A8 and S100A9. On the site of inflammation, the neutrophils release the cytosol as an inflammatory response. The circulating calprotectin concentration increases and can therefore be used as marker for neutrophil activation and inflammation. READ MORE
