  1. 6. Muscle function in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis : A two-year follow-up

    Author : Hans Lindehammar; Lars Larsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; arthritis; juvenile rheumatoid; physiopathology; muscle; skeletal; pathology; physiopathology; Muscular atrophy; etiology; physiopathology; arthritis; juvenile rheumatoid; complications; Medicine; Medicin;

    Abstract : This is a study of muscle function in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a disease that primarily affects the synovial membrane of joints. Muscle weakness, atrophy and pain occur in adult RA. This may be a consequence of joint pain, stiffness and immobility. READ MORE

  2. 7. Intensive Care Unit Muscle Wasting : Skeletal Muscle Phenotype and Underlying Molecular Mechanisms

    Author : Sudhakar Reddy Aare; Larsson Lars; Rooyackers Olav; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; acute quadriplegic myopathy; gene expression; myosin; heat shock proteins; mechanical ventilation; myostatin; sepsis; corticosteroids; diaphragm; Clinical Neurophysiology; Klinisk neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Acute quadriplegic myopathy (AQM), or critical illness myopathy, is a common debilitating acquired disorder in critically ill intensive care unit (ICU) patients characterized by generalized muscle wasting and weakness of limb and trunk muscles. A preferential loss of the thick filament protein myosin is considered pathognomonic of this disorder, but the myosin loss is observed relatively late during the disease progression. READ MORE

  3. 8. Analysis of deep brain stimulation and ablative lesions in surgical treatment of movement disorders : with emphasis on safety aspects

    Author : Patric Blomstedt; Bengt Linderoth; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; deep brain stimulation; pallidotomy; thalamotomy; complications; Parkinson s disease; essential tremor; Clinical Neurophysiology; klinisk neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Background The last decade has witnessed a renaissance of functional stereotactic neurosurgery in the treatment of patients with movement disorders, especially advanced Parkinson’s disease (PD), essential tremor (ET) and dystonia. Ablative lesions such as thalamotomy and pallidotomy have been gradually replaced by the technique of chronic deep brain stimulation (DBS) applied to targets in the basal ganglia and thalamus, and assumed to be more lenient to the brain than stereotactic radiofrequency lesions. 4. 9. Celluar and Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Regulation of Skeletal Muscle Contraction in Health and Disease

    Author : Mingxin Li; Lars Larsson; Tomas Winkler; Alf Månsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Scaling; myosin heavy chain; in vitro motility assay; myopathy; Clinical neurophysiology; Klinisk neurofysiologi; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : Morphological changes, genetic modifications, and cell functional alterations are not always parallel. Therefore, assessment of skeletal muscle function is an integral part of the etiological approach. READ MORE

  5. 10. The matter of white matter in Alzheimer's disease. -On white matter disease from neuropathology and neuroimaging to clinical presentation

    Author : Martin Sjöbeck; Lund Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []

    Abstract : Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent type of dementing disorder. The cortical pathology of AD has been recognized for almost a century. In later years, an associated pathological feature of AD has been identified which affects the white matter. READ MORE
