  1. 1. Perspectives on the role of digital tools in students' open-ended physics inquiry

    Author : Elias Euler; Bor Gregorcic; Cedric Linder; Konrad Schönborn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; digital learning environments; modeling; semi-formalisms; microworlds; social semiotics; embodied cognition; disciplinary-relevant aspects; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : In this licentiate thesis, I present detailed case studies of students as they make use of simulated digital learning environments to engage with physics phenomena. In doing so, I reveal the moment-to-moment minutiae of physics students’ open-ended inquiry in the presence of two digital tools, namely the sandbox software Algodoo and the PhET simulation My Solar System (both running on an interactive whiteboard). 2. 2. Encountering Evolution : Children's Meaning-Making Processes in Collaborative Interactions

    Author : Johanna Frejd; Magnus Hultén; Karin Stolpe; Konrad Schönborn; Christina Siry; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Meaning-making processes; Science Education; Evolution; Multimodality; Collaborative Interaction; Exploratory studies; Meningsskapandeprocesser; Naturvetenskapsundervisning; Evolution; Multimodalitet; Interaktion; Explorativa studier;

    Abstract : This thesis explores preschool class children’s meaning making processes when they encounter evolution. By adopting social semiotic and sociocultural perspectives on meaning making, three group-based tasks were designed. Video data from the activities were analysed using a multimodal approach. 3. 3. Crossing the threshold : Visualization design and conceptual understanding of evolution

    Author : Andreas C. Göransson; Lena Tibell; Konrad Schönborn; Anat Yarden; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Evolution; Natural selection; Visualization; Conceptual understanding; Conceptual change;

    Abstract : The theory of evolution is considered the unifying theory of biology. An accurate understanding of evolution is vital both for the understanding of diverse topics in biology, but also for societal issues such as antibiotic resistance or biodiversity. READ MORE

  4. 4. Analogical reasoning in science education : - connections to semantics and scientific modelling in thermodynamics

    Author : Jesper Haglund; Helge Strömdahl; Konrad Schönborn; Roland Kjellander; Kevin Dunbar; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; science education; thermodynamics; analogical reasoning; semantics; scientific modelling; naturvetenskapsdidaktik; termodynamik; analogiskt tänkande; semantik; vetenskaplig modellering;

    Abstract : Analogiskt tänkande är en central kognitiv förmåga som vi använder i vardagslivet, såväl som i mer formella sammanhang, såsom i forskning och undervisning. Föreliggande avhandling behandlar hur analogier och analogiskt tänkande, uppmärksamhet på semantik och förståelse för vetenskaplig modellering kan användas för att hantera utmaningar i naturvetenskapsundervisningen, särskilt inom området termodynamik.
