  1. 1. Regional Energy Systems with Retrofitted Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plants

    Author : Song Han; Yan Jinyue; Thorin Eva; Deng Shiming; Mälardalens högskola; []
    Keywords : Combined heat and power; Waste-to-Energy WtE ; Regional energy system; Greenhouse gases GHG ; Retrofitting; Optimization; Kraftvärme; Avfall-till-Energi; Regionala Energisystem; Växthusgaser; Uppgradering; Optimering.; Energy- and Environmental Engineering; energi- och miljöteknik;

    Abstract : Fossil fuel depletion, economic development, urban expansion and climate change present tough challenges to municipal- and regional-scale energy systems. Regional energy system planning, including waste treatment, renewable energy supply, energy efficiency, and climate change, are considered essential to meet these challenges and move toward a sustainable society. Abstract : The use of biomass-based combined heat and power (CHP) plants is considered by the EU administration to be an effective way to increase the use of renewables in the energy system, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to alleviate the dependency on imported fossil fuels. At present in Sweden, most of the CHP plants are operated in part-load mode because of variations in heat demand. READ MORE

  3. 3. Building Energy Efficiency Measures in District Heating Systems

    Author : Tina Lidberg; Louise Ödlund; Thomas Olofsson; Erik Dahlquist; Högskolan i Gävle; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; building simulation; combined heat and power; district heating; domestic hot water; energy efficiency; greenhouse gas emission; low-temperature; multi-family building; primary energy; refurbishment; byggnadsimulering; energieffektivitet; flerfamiljshus; fjärrvärme; kraftvärme; lågtemperatur; primärenergi; renovering; tappvarmvatten; växthusgas; Hållbar stadsutveckling; Sustainable Urban Development; Reesbe företagsforskarskola;

    Abstract : Improving energy performance of existing buildings is an important part in decreasing energy use and in turn reducing greenhouse gas emissions and primary energy use. To be able to evaluate how energy refurbishment influences greenhouse gas emissions and primary energy use a wider system perspective is needed which puts the building in its context. READ MORE

    Abstract : With joint commitments by twenty-seven countries under the Paris Agreement, the European Union envisioned a resource-efficient and competitive economy without net emission of greenhouse gases by 2050. Immediate and massive efforts across sectors of energy, industry, and buildings will be required, and district heating (DH), through its ability to integrate efficiency measures on the supply and demand side, can play a central role. 5. 5. Integration of thermochemical processes with existing waste management industries to enhance biomethane production

    Author : Chaudhary Awais Salman; Jinyue Yan; Eva Thorin; Yang Weihong; Mälardalens högskola; []

    Abstract : In most waste management industries, waste is separated into different fractions, each of which is treated with suitable processes. Established technologies such as waste combustion for combined heat and power (CHP) production and biomethane production through anaerobic digestion (AD) of biodegradable waste work fine as standalone processes.
