  1. 1. Fat contamination of pericardial suction blood in cardiac surgery : clinical and experimental studies in perspectives of transfusion logistics

    Author : Micael Appelblad; Gunnar Engström; Krister Lindmark; Anders Jeppsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Surgery; blood transfusion; cardiopulmonary bypass; pericardial suction blood; fat contamination; lipid microemboli; density separation; surface adsorption; Kirurgi; Surgery; kirurgi;

    Abstract : Introduction: During cardiac surgery aided by cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) the autotransfusion of pericardial suction blood (PSB) is regarded mandatory to limit allogeneic blood exposure. PSB is however proposed as a source of lipid microemboli and to contribute to brain damage. READ MORE

  2. 2. The clinical value of total isovolumic time

    Author : Gani Bajraktari; Michael Henein; Krister Lindmark; Lars-Åke Brodin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Heart failure; cardiac resynchronization therapy; predictors; echocardiography; total isovolumic time; six-minute walk test; left ventricular dyssynchrony;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the use of Doppler echocardiography markers ofglobal dyssynchrony [total isovolumic time (t-IVT)] in the following 6 studies: 1) Its prognostic role in predicting cardiac events in patients undergoing CABG surgery,compared with conventional global systolic and diastolic measurements. 2) Its additional value in predicting six minute walk test (6-MWT) in patients with leftventricular (LV) ejection fraction (EF) . 3. 3. Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists in heart failure : exploring the gap between guideline-directed medical therapy and real-world practice

    Author : Anna Jonsson Holmdahl; Krister Lindmark; Helena Norberg; Ellinor Bergdahl; Fredrik Valham; Niklas Bergh; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Heart failure; Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists; estimated glomerular filtration rate; hyperkalemia; impaired renal function; worsening renal function; guideline-directed medical therapy; kardiologi; Cardiology;

    Abstract : Heart failure is the possible end-result of a variety of different diseases, where ischemic heart disease and hypertension are the most common causes in high income countries. In Sweden, heart failure has a prevalence of 2% in the adult population and rises to over 10% among people over 70 years of age. The 5-year all-cause mortality is about 50%. READ MORE

  4. 4. Clinical characteristics and prognosis of peripartum cardiomyopathy

    Author : Kamilu Musa Karaye; Michael Henein; Krister Lindmark; Maria Schaufelberger; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : peripartum cardiomyopathy; characteristics; survival; selenium; RV dysfunction; Cardiology; kardiologi;

    Abstract : Background:Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is an incompletely understood disease that causes significant morbidity and mortality in many parts of the world, including Northern Nigeria. The aims of this Thesis were: [1] to determine if selenium deficiency, serum ceruloplasmin and traditional birth practices are risk factors for PPCM, in Kano, Nigeria; [2] to describe the one year survival and left ventricular reverse remodeling (LVRR) in a group of patients with PPCM from three referral hospitals in Kano, Nigeria; [3] to identify potential electrocardiographic (ECG) predictors of PPCM; and [4] to assess right ventricular systolic dysfunction (RVSD) and remodelling in a cohort of PPCM patients in Kano, Nigeria.
